Friday night game/nugget

Jan 28, 2016, 3:19 PM

I know a lot of people are not thrilled with the prospect of a Friday night game this season, but I talked to one person who deals with the television portion of the ACC and they told me that Friday night games are not only not going away, they will eventually replace Thursday night games.

Here is what I was told: When ESPN first came out with the Thursday games, they were the only thing on TV and were a great lead-in to the football weekend. There were always some really good matchups and the ratings were good. Then the NFL came along and saw the gold mine that was Thursday and now there is a 7-1 ratio of people watching NFL vs the college game on Thursdays. The truth is that ESPN is losing money now and it's because the NFL has taken over the market. So they came up with Friday games, and they get good ratings.

So the thought is more Friday games will appear on the schedule and the ACC will be part of that. I've even heard that one of our closest rivals will have a Friday night home game at some point in the next few years.

It's all about money.

closest rivals as in GT, FSU, NC state, or USuCk. I'm assuming one of the first 3 because you mentioned ACC.

Yep..I was told an ACC school we play every year. That's all I know.

FSU already has a Friday home game this year***

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

umm- did you you hear that from the 2016 football schedule

Jan 28, 2016, 3:46 PM [ in reply to Re: Friday night game/nugget ]

announcement?? because our biggest ACC rival(FSU) is hosting BC this year on Friday night.

Also as a high school football coach this royally sucks even worse than Thursday. At least you could catch most of the second half on Thursday after JV games but now I'll miss the whole thing due to Varsity being the exact same time.

FSU is hosting BC on a Friday - November 11th.

Right which i took to mean SCAR. Funny that all that SEC $$

to my knowledge Clemson has never hosted a Thursday night game?

this could mean we may never host a Friday night game?

I hope we don't anyways.

that we have solid reasons to keep them away from Clemson. Since our whole town/campus is overtaken by traffic and tailgaters, it causes major headaches.

Schools in larger cities don't have these issues.

I know Clemson has hosted Georgia Tech several times and N.C. State once on Thursday night.

one of our biggest rivals has one this year...

Jan 28, 2016, 3:41 PM

either the ACC made a deal with FSU, or FSU caved to the ACC...

I can't see them willingly doing that

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

if all acc teams will participate, the only choice that

Jan 28, 2016, 3:46 PM

remains is home or away?

i know clemson for numerous reasons[school closing] chooses to travel, maybe fsu chose to host?

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

i know... it just seems odd to me that they would

Jan 28, 2016, 3:55 PM

prefer that... I'm sure they have their reasons, but I would think they would be similar to Clemson in the Friday night/importance of high school football arena...

If what Jimbo was saying is true {about FSU not wanting to host them}... it just makes me wonder if the ACC pulled rank on their preference

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

why? the lesser of the two evils in their mind?

Jan 28, 2016, 3:59 PM

and drad has already said no to a home one, so if enough say yes it seems a none issue.

Dvr'ing a game counts towards ratings btw. I personally think it a good idea, college football thur-sat. What's the issue?

Boycott Friday games

Jan 28, 2016, 3:44 PM

Attend your local high school's games instead. DVR/record the game and watch it the next day and skip all of the commercials.

If enough of the viewing audience does this it will have a significant impact.

Fridays are for high school football and that should be preserved.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Boycott Friday games

Jan 28, 2016, 10:53 PM

My response about dvr was to this post, you can't boycott and dvr record, it still shows your household in the rating numbers for viewing/recording it which will then equal advertising dollars which is why this is happening in the first place.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

DVR doesn't get reported until you watch

Jan 29, 2016, 9:50 AM

there are several types of ratings: overnight ratings and then ratings taken several days later.

DVR recording would severely damage the overnight ratings, which are considered the most valuable because they are mostly live views in which the commercials weren't skipped. Later ratings are considered less important because people fast forward through the ads.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: DVR doesn't get reported until you watch

Jan 29, 2016, 10:04 AM

Overnight ratings are the least important these days, the several days later dvr ratings are what matters now due to Internet Hulu, other streaming sources; movement started with TiVo. The sponsors for the games with ads during the games(scoreboard, brought to you by, etc) are becoming more valuable because no one watches commercials anymore, 10 more years there won't be live tv commercials.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think you are inflating the importance of high school football

Jan 28, 2016, 11:43 PM [ in reply to Boycott Friday games ]

I understand that it has always been a Friday night game, but most people who attend high school games are high school students and parents of the players/band members. Yes, I realize that there are others who attend because they enjoy it, but these make up a very small percentage.

I realize that some like to think of high school football as this incredible gathering on Feiday night when the small town shuts down to cheer for their beloved team, but I just don't think that is the case anymore unless you live in Texas or small town USA. Those days are gone.

home games for Saturdays? Because many Clemson fans work M-F and are spread across the South--and because of our great tailgaiting tradition (which isn't the same with classes going on) this seems like a no-brainer. We are different. We are Clemson. Saturday home games are our "sacred" days in the fall.
