There is an LSU fan talking about that on the Paul Finebaum show as we speak.Paul did not know that that was LSU's first National Championship but did know that the Sugar Bowl at that time was in Tulane's stadium and Paul was surprised to hear that LSU beat Clemson for the National Title in the 1958 Sugar Bowl. The guy said isn't it ironic that that happened in the same place as this years National Championship game against the same team.

LSU was a very heavy favorite and did beat our Tigers 7-0 in the 1959 Sugar Bowl, but that game did not decide the National Championship. Back then, the NC was decided by the polls at the end of regular seasons, and LSU had already sealed their NC prior to the bowl. If we had beaten them 40-0, they would still have been the NC.

We lost on a 4th and goal halfback pass from the 10 yard line after a bad snap on a punt attempt. That was a great game, and Clemson gained a lot of national respect. The experts had predicted that LSU would run us out of the stadium.
