SEC, ESPN To Announce SEC TV Channel on Tuesday

By Michael Smith & John Ourand
The SEC and ESPN plan to formally announce the creation of an SEC channel on Tuesday. The two parties have begun to reach out to key constituents to let them know about the 12:00pm ET announcement at the Atlanta Hyatt. University presidents, ADs, SEC Commissioner Mike Slive, ESPN execs and the conference's corporate sponsors are among those being invited to the news conference. The SEC and ESPN have been working on plans to form a channel since the fall of '11, and the new channel is expected to launch in August '14.

The channel is expected to have its studio headquarters in Charlotte at the ESPN Regional Television offices, while the primary sales outlet will be based in Atlanta.

There is only one reason that this deal is valuable:

Bundling.

ESPN is going to force it down the throat of every single cable provider in the Southeast and, potentially, other parts of the country as well (such as North Carolina and Virginia). The programming is going to be terrible-- all the worst games of the week (i.e. ESPN3 games)-- and outside of football season, the network will be borderline unwatchable. But it doesn't matter because it will be bundled into basic cable packages, everyone will have to pay an extra $1 or $2 per month, and life goes on. It's just a shame that the SEC can get disgustingly rich off the average Joe cable subscriber.

I thought every ESPN Channel was already an SEC channel the way they act.

Oh well we've got mighty Raycom and Swoffs kid in our corner. That should make ACC'ers feel better. :)

It's just going to get harder for the ACC to stay within

Swoffie's keeping family employed to the entire league's detriment.
