Explain This Clemson - "Tater" Connection ----

Dec 5, 2013, 4:41 PM

A lot of us call the Cluckster's "Coots."
I saw them refer to Clemson fans about 5 years ago
as "Taters". I heard it again today and I always
wondered what in the world is the association
or meaning???? I mean we are not from Idaho.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Their smartest idiot probably thought we were from Irelandaho

Dec 5, 2013, 4:44 PM

And they probably rolled with it without asking questions.

Whatever you do, always give 100%.....unless it's donating blood

It's a weak and desperate attempt to somehow....

Dec 5, 2013, 4:45 PM

rebuff our proud agricultural heritage all the while being too ignorant to realize how short their life expectancy would be without farmers and land grant institutions like Clemson.

Agriculture - Is the number 1 income producing sector in the South Carolina economy. Embrace it.

Another thing to add to the list of things Coot fans don't

Dec 5, 2013, 4:47 PM

know is geography. I frequently bring up that were not in Idaho. I guess tater came from CU being an agricultural school.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yeah it's supposed to be a slight to our ag history

Dec 5, 2013, 4:48 PM

I think...like we are a bunch of redneck tater farmers. As BigCU said, it originated from "I Plant/Pick Taters All Year" and has just been shortened to "taters." Funny thing is that I believe SC is generally pretty terrible for growing potatoes.

How Original....But Thats Chickenlina ----

Dec 5, 2013, 4:59 PM

I also found out that Texas A&M's Reiville is considered
as their 1st Lady -- A dog/collie is considered their
1st Lady. The SEC...Birds of a feather...........

But yeah the strawberry farm up near Seneca is much
better than the growing potatoes.

how original is coot?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That doesn't make sense

Dec 5, 2013, 8:40 PM [ in reply to IPTAY = I Pick Taters All Year*** ]

Taters don't grow on trees or bushes.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Someone told me...

Dec 5, 2013, 5:05 PM

that back when IPTAY started you could pay 10 a year, or if you didnt have it you could barter up potatoes. Idk if true.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Is there another..

Dec 5, 2013, 5:13 PM

Clemson's small town college atmosphere and rural setting are game for the "big city college" at the state capital city. Anyone who has ever attended a game at Death Valley can see why it has been voted the #1 venue in America to watch a college football game by several publications recently. The willy B bluff rd. atmosphere will NEVER EVER be considered.

Florida fans eat gator

Dec 5, 2013, 8:43 PM

Before games.

I saw a few throwing pieces of gator into the gator pond in Gainesville.

When I was at Clemson in the 60's, they called us

Dec 5, 2013, 8:51 PM

the Farmers...a reference to our agriculture heritage.

We always called them the Chickens...a reference to...well, their Chickendom.

All these references to Coots and Taters, I thought were internet inventions. Recently, I jokingly called a friend, who is a Gamecock alumnus, a Coot...and he looked at me and said, "Who the h... are you calling 'old,' you old fart?"

We both laughed...me especially, because he had no idea what I meant by Coot....lol

My impression is that it came from the play on IPTAY…I Pick Taters All Year.

Actually, coots can fly, although they are not the most graceful flyers.
The link bellows shows a coot taking off from water.
