Here's why Al Jazeera is a danger to America

Mar 11, 2017, 6:02 AM

They don't understand our acronyms. Pretty sure if you were to Google the words in this headline you'd end up on a watch list or in front of a death panel of bad hombres.

Al Jazeera is a reflection of what journalism once was . . .

Mar 11, 2017, 8:56 AM

before the cable-news era. Or what journalism should be. Informative, factual reportage. Comprehensive coverage of international news. Investigative reporting, rather than talking heads who do nothing but scream at each other while saying nothing. Informed opinion pieces, which often run counter to conventional media wisdom. Reporting that focuses on the lives & struggles of everyday people, rather than obsessing over elites & power-brokers. Fearless pursuit of truth, in spite of the efforts of governments & armies to suppress & censor it.

Al Jazeera has had more reporters killed in action, sometimes having been deliberately targeted, than any other international news network. In our own country, their mobile reporting station in Ferguson, Mo., was deliberately tear-gassed by police in 2014. Around the world, several of its reporters have faced criminal charges & imprisonment for their work.)

In these times of "post-truth" & "alternative facts", when there seems to be no such thing anymore as "objective journalism", Al Jazeera comes across a refreshing island of candor in a sea of propaganda. So in that sense I can understand why our homegrown authoritarians would consider it subversive.

They do indeed win major journalistic kudos despite the fact - or maybe because of the fact - that they cheese everybody off. I'll give 'em their due, though, they are fearless, and they do represent the Islamic Thinking Person's attempt to educate and property define and objectively report upon not just the world but their own backyard.

They are pro-Muslim, though, and do have their own inherent biases just like any other news org on the planet.

Don't worry, Trump likely owes them money

Mar 11, 2017, 8:06 PM

The last time he was broke, the usual US banks and friends of his like Mark Cuban refused to bail him out. That's how he ended up owing so much to the Bank of China, that billionaire in Indonesia, and likely the Qatari royal family that owns Al Jeezy.
