Final 2018 Prodigal Football Ratings

Jan 8, 2019, 8:36 AM

Congratulation to Clemson, mainly for winning the National Championship, of course, but also for finishing #1 in the Prodigal Football Ratings for the first time. Attached is a PDF of the full rating. I also attached one that sorts by conference, so you can easily see how teams within conferences compared with each other.

Now, where should Clemson rank among the great teams of all time? I don't know about that, but I can tell you some things about how they compare to other teams in the last seven seasons, which is how long I've been doing my ratings. Their raw rating of 3.858 is the highest of any team in these seven years. Here's a list, which excludes the first year, 2012, because the formula was different:

1. 2018 Clemson, 3.858 (champs)
2. 2016 Alabama, 3.632
3. 2016 Clemson, 3.568 (champs)
4. 2014 Ohio St., 3.515 (champs)
5. 2018 Alabama, 3.419
6. 2015 Alabma, 3.382 (champs)
7. 2017 Alabama, 3.207 (champs)
8. 2016 Ohio St., 3.188
9. 2013 Florida St., 2.966 (champs)

Of course, you know that Clemson is the first team in this era to go 15-0. They are the first team since 2013 Florida St. to go undefeated and finish #1 in my ratings. Clemson had an average scoring margin of 31.13 points per game, which is the second-highest of any team in the last 7 years. Here's a list:

1. 2013 Florida St., 38.85 ppg
2. 2018 Clemson, 31.13 ppg
3. 2018 Alabama, 27.53 ppg
4. 2016 Michigan, 26.23 ppg
5. 2012 Oregon, 26.17 ppg
6. 2012 Alabama, 26.15 ppg
7. 2016 Alabama, 25.80 ppg
8. 2013 Baylor, 25.75 ppg

Conference and Division Rankings

See attached if you're interested in how the conferences and divisions compared this season. It was a huge year of SEC dominance in my ratings.
