before 8 years of W went and messed it all up. 8 years of Obama got things headed back in the right direction, and now look what's happening under Trump. I don't think you'll have to wait that much longer.

BTW fiscal year 2009 began in October 2008..

What would you say about 2011? That’s the next worst diparity.

These should also be compared with GDP.

But of course your convenient diagram doesn't say what it means by "taxes"

Oh and thank your God, Obama, for ####### up our debt by doubling it from 10 to 20 trillion.

If you adjust for inflation so we have a fair comparison and use actual fiscal years you get a better picture. I start with Reagan as that is where our modern debt began.

Reagan – 1.9 trillion
H.W. Bush – 1.6 trillion
Clinton – 1.4 trillion
W. Bush – 5.9 trillion
Obama – 8.6 trillion
Trump – 2 trillion in 2 years.

So basically, Trump is on track for the same levels of Obama except he hasn't had a resection to deal with.

Did you notice?

Wonder what we would be like if had never gone to Iraq or stayed in Afghanistan so long.

In “good” economic periods those lines need to be converging

not diverging. These trends need to be considered in a larger context of the overall economic conditions of the period. Comparing 2009 to 2019 is silly.

Trump and present day republicans do not embrace conservative economic policy including a lean towards a balanced budget and eventually lower deficits.

Democrats are pretty much where they have always been in supporting more liberal spending policies primarily focused on social programs.

Missing the conservative counter weight to liberal policies is concerning.

To buffer that a bit I'll add...

8 years of Obama denutting our military, allowing ISIS to run rampant by pulling out of Iraq early and putting million and millions more on welfare while strapping the federal gov with Obamacare may be a contributing factor in the spending issues we're having.

Our military got behind but maybe not as much as spending indicates. We could cut some of that. As for Obamacare, once you give America a social program it's very difficult to find enough votes to take it back it.

The graph in the thread starter which shows gov spending and gov tax revenues is quite deceptive. Our gov doesn't spend according to what it takes in. It spends because it's one of the only function it does well. National defense is second.

This is peculiar to me.

Everyone I know has to pay additional taxes at the end this year. I've never had to pay this much before.

I think I got an additional $30 / week from our tax break.

"The top 20 percent of earners received more than 60 percent of the total tax savings, according to the Tax Policy Center; the top 1 percent received nearly 17 percent of the total benefit, and got an average tax cut of more than $30,000. That’s not even factoring in the law’s huge cut to corporate taxes, which disproportionately benefit the wealthy households that own the most stock."
