FB rules questions

Sep 11, 2015, 11:14 PM

1)Recently I saw in a HS game a team killed the clock by taking a knee at the end of a half. Instead of being under center they were in the shotgun. Center hikes the ball, QB takes a knee. I thought it was a penalty if your QB didn't do that under center.

2)HS team attempted an onside kick.
Ball only traveled 8 yards. Ref blew whistle, receiving team took possession with no penalty. Is it not the case that a flag should have been thrown and receiving team gets a chance to return it on another kick?

1. Legal

2. If ball stops before 10 yds w/o being touched, receiving team gets it there

1) It doesn't matter where you take a knee since you don't have to be down by contact. Spiking the ball is different, if you're not under center, it'd be intentional grounding.

Not true, you just has to be a motion that shows you are stopping the clock.

Taking a shotgun snap to spike the ball wouldn't make much sense. Extra split second waiting on snap could prove costly. Also more risk with a center rushing a shotgun snap than with the QB under center.

Only the kicking team has to wait for the ball to go 10 yards. The receiving tram can get it whenever.

2. Are you talking about the Eastside vs. Wade Hampton game? If so, that ball didn't go 10 yards BUT it did touch a Wade Hampton player before the 10 yard line, making is anyone's ball.
