Something that confuses me

Oct 13, 2014, 3:56 PM

David Olson

I know it hasn't been at Clemson, but this young man spent 4 years as a valuable backup
at Stanford. STANFORD! Not Col of Charleston, or Citadel, or Vandy. Stanford. Surely
this kid received some great coaching and a good college exp.
So, Clemson brings him in for 1 year, correct? Maybe I expected too much. But I thought
this guy would come in a compete for playing time, I really did.
Now, it seems (as of now)- his time at Clemson will be wasted. I've heard no mention of
his name. How does he go from being the number #2 guy at QB-U ( sort to speak)- to no where
to be found at Clemson- especially with no clear cut guy at #2 here....I said...NO CLEAR
CUT NUM #2- that's right.
Hmmm...just doesn't make sense to me.

#21

In short, David really doesn't fit the system. Stanford runs more of a pro style offense where the run sets up the pass. The QB isn't expected to run the ball nor do it effectively. I don't think he was ever the #2. For all intensive purposes, the infamous Chad Kelly was the #2 followed closely by Deshaun Watson before David Olsen ever stepped on campus. Olsen came to Clemson because there was an open QB spot; not to enter the competition.

I will tell you this. It is great to have a guy who is a brain at the QB spot. David Olsen gives you someone who has a wealth of knowledge and can adapt his knowledge to the gameplaning. A lot of the backups and practice team players for Stanford pride themselves on this fact. I bet on Saturdays, Olsen provides insight to what isn't working and how they should attack it instead.
