there is nothing wrong with a democratic republic taxing the masses for common good, there is everything wrong with complete government control of commerce.

Healthcare is not a power of the federal government so it is reserved for the states. This is how federalism works.

Re: And that's what makes it socialism?***

Feb 6, 2019, 10:15 AM

Healthcare is not a right, it is an economic commodity: a service to be specific.

You do not have a right to free services.

The duty of the Federal government has 4 main directives:
1. Ensure that commerce occurs freely and efficiently between this states, but that the government not control commerce.
- The Federal government's power here is to ensure that trade and commerce between the states occurs painlessly and efficiently. The Feds exist here to prevent states from levying embargoes and tariffs on each other, to ensure that the economy is protected from economic threats (like monopolies, ponzi schemes, fraud), and to ensure it has adequate infrastructure to operate efficiently (interstates, ports, bridges, financial and minimal business regulatory agencies)

2. Protect the sovereign territory of the United States with a military
- This includes borders security and military forces station domestically, and a national guard, for homefront defense.

3. Protect US economic interests as they operate abroad
- The original justification for the Navy and other US military expeditionary forces. Despite what naysayers may think, if American oil companies are doing business in Iraq, and a militant regime threatens that business which has major economic impacts within the US, our government has every right under the Constitution to engage in war to protect our specific economic interests.

4. Abide by the Constitution and Bill of Rights
- This is the justification for the Supreme Court and the court system, to judge laws based upon their Constitutionality.

Natural Law was the school of philosophy which the Founders used to create our Constitution. Within this philosophy, there exists the notion that government is a necessary evil. Government and some of its services should exist, but only in a minimalist aspect.

Government is the thermostat which keeps the economic engine of a nation from overheating. The people are the drivers.

I agree they were brilliant, but with 27 Amendments on the books (and counting) it's clear that no legal document avoids obsolescence forever.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We are very much a capitalistic society, even though

Feb 5, 2019, 10:48 PM [ in reply to The military, our highway system, public libraries and Medicare are ]

it certainly contains some socialistic elements and institutions. Still, capitalism drives and sustains this nation. Trump was correct - we are not a socialist nation, and hopefully never will be, and instead will always preserve our birthright of freedom.

The key is "young Americans".

Feb 6, 2019, 7:18 AM [ in reply to Of course we are not a socialist nation. ]

I don't think it's too outrageous to think younger Americans will embrace the idea more. As they get older, earn more money, and see more of it taken away by the fed, I predict those attitudes will change.

But if you want to start changing those attitudes, something has to be addressed with college cost and healthcare cost. Of course, giving it away free isn't feasible. But it continues to rise, especially with college (due to dishonest and greedy admins at those colleges), and no one seems to want to stop it.

Thus, younger Americans will look to extremes. People embrace the ideology that seems to benefit them the most.

Feb 6, 2019, 7:25 AM

To be honest, Trump was calling for less freedom for most Americans. Freedom isn't not having health care, being homeless when you are old, or caring awful student debt your whole life. That's what Trump sees he wants to continue.
