If you keep beating a dead horse and making a big deal of this, it won't go away and we may end up losing our top recruit!
Robert already squashed it! Let's all move on!

The article and headline have already been changed on AJC and hopefully the writer is giving his exit interview.

others to such a point? He needs to get somebody to toss him a rope to get him out of his own cesspool - he's not 17 anymore and should know enough to show some class. Way worse than the original AJC article.

I knew David when he was 17 and I can assure you that while he may have been a self described "piece of work" he was not a bad kid at all. I still have the utmost respect for he and his family. If he was part of the "cesspool" he would have named names. Think about it. Read his articles. None of them and I mean none of them are mean and spiteful. That's because David is not a mean spiteful person and never has been.

Doyle is a blowhard with that spins venom into profit.
Jul 13, 2012, 10:05 AM
|
|
In 2000, after our undefeated season deflated in epic fashion, he wrote an opinion piece in the Raleigh N&O about how Clemson fans were delirious, and unreasonable expectations, and deserved to be taken down a notch. (As if the previous 8 years hadn't already accomplished that for us.)
I sent him an email and basically told him take it easy - we're fans for our own reasons for supporting our team and aching when the team looses. His hate fest with Clemson fans - and any other fan base for that matter is the most juvenile response. I also said something about how he sounded like he was in the middle of a roid-induced rage fest. He responded and said that comment made him laugh. So at least he has (or had) a sense of humor.
Which brings me to this - Doyle says manifestly unreasonable things and trades in half-truths and innuendo. But he does it for a reason - it drives visits to his site. Doyle has figured out that publicity, whether good or bad, increases hits, which then translates in to increased advertising sales. Thus, the very act of liking to his article on TNet, even if to point out how egregious his writing is, is actually helping him out. Mickey is to be commended for his judgment in redacting his name and omitting the link to the website. My own recommendation: try to resist the urge to visit his site, if you can...
Finally, Doyle is an equal opportunity offender. He's gone after just about anyone and everyone that has an active fanbase that, when worked up over his latest diatribe, will predictably visit his site en masse. So don't take his lunatic rantings personally. Its just Gregg being Gregg. And being very profitable...

If it was Alabama, LSU, or any other "mighty" SEC school, then nobody would be saying anything. The fact that the #1 recruit in country coming from Georgia and going to Clemson is just eating the media up alive. They can't stand that fact the he's going to Clemson and they're trying to rip this deal apart.

From Gregg Doyle's article:
"So this is wrong, a big-time recruit named Robert Nkemdiche trying to finagle a scholarship for a much smaller-time recruit named ... wait, you know what? I'm not going to make it worse for the much smaller-time recruit by naming him. It's not (name redacted)'s fault that Nkemdiche is trying to leverage his status into a scholarship for a friend. He doesn't deserve the scrutiny that has come, and will get worse, because of this. Google doesn't forget, so this will follow (name redacted) wherever he goes, and while I'm not exactly saving (name redacted) that anguish by refusing to print his name, I'd rather not add to his woes. This isn't his fault.
It's not Clemson's fault, either. Not yet, anyway. If Clemson offers (name redacted) a scholarship? Well, sure. Then it would be Clemson's fault, because giving (name redacted) a $37,000 scholarship just to win the services of Nkemdiche would violate the spirit of the NCAA rulebook.
Would the NCAA have the gumption, the nerve, to pursue Clemson? No, probably not. The NCAA would hide behind the same thing that Clemson fans are hiding behind now: Maybe (name redacted) is worth the scholarship on his own merit!
Which is garbage. Until last week, (name redacted) was indeed a Division I football recruit, but not at Clemson's level. Clemson recruits from the back of the menu, choosing between filet mignon and lobster tail. Until this week, (name redacted) was at the front of the menu with the chicken fingers and potato skins. He was listed as a two-star recruit by some services, with offers from non-BCS schools Arkansas State, Georgia State, Southern Miss and Tulane.
(Name redacted) also was offered by one BCS school, but put an asterisk on that sucker. The school is Ole Miss, which was surely working its own angle to get Nkemdiche -- whose older brother already plays for the Rebels"

Get'em David!!! Curious though...
Jul 10, 2012, 4:57 PM
|
|
"recruiting stories get more hits than any other kind of article on our site – an article about a 16-year old in Florida will get five times the number of hits over a Clemson baseball story. An article about a 17-year old in Georgia who “narrows” his list to 20 will get 10 times the number of hits than a Clemson basketball story."
Thats because Clemson fans live and breath football! Would be curious what the stats are on a football article vs a football recruiting article

The fact that recruits are still very much kids...some of them less mature than others. Also, there is so much poor journalism out there that it makes the trade look bad over all. Some of these guys are just trying to get a reaction and don't care who they step on in the process.
Thanks for the reality check David!

Typical Doyel.
Jul 10, 2012, 6:12 PM

|
He has no actual journalistic talent, so he just writes a bunch of inflammatory crap in hopes of pissing off fan bases to get readers.
He's basically an internet troll that somehow gets paid for it by a major network.

Sportsline. I think it is outrageous that Doyel could right such a judgmental article without doing one ounce of homework.

general. He represents the worst about sports. He's a paid mouthpiece for haters, and I have no interest in supporting him or a website that would pay him to write.

Bravo, Kudos and Major Dittos!!! Well said, and I hope people will wake up and act like grown men and let young men deal with all the things that really are important to them, like getting dates, making grades, living up to family expectations, yes getting their high school teams and buddies some attention, etc. The "name redacted" sleezeball is about the bottom wrung of the ladder. I guess that's why a rag like the ajc rag hired him.

The irony, of course, is Doyel did just what you said you do for TigerNet...write the columns/stories that get the most hits.
He got more hits by writing this story than did all the guys who took the other side combined. Doyel did exactly what his readers (other than Clemson fans) wanted...validated their skepticism...and in the process gained many hits he otherwise would not have.
I'm not condoning his column, I think he's scum...but the point is, that as long as it's about "what story gets the most hits" then this type of "journalism" will flourish on the internet.

You are spot on. I couldn't agree more. Wish some of the mouth-foamers would let it go. Obviously, the coaches have to recruit for the benefit of the team. Regarding the "journalist:" in question, he's in the "red-light" sector of that profession.
