I wish I could sit down with Garret Williams.

Feb 28, 2019, 8:39 AM

As someone who recently went through USMC OCS, did my time at TBS, and went out to 29 Palms for BCOC, I would love to chat with him.

Selfishly, Id love to convince him to stay another year. I went through OCS at the age of 28. I was old AF.

I read that he was at practice yesterday but on the sidelines wearing a grey sweatshirt. Sounds like his mind is made up. I'm with you, selfishly I'd like for him to return to the team but am so proud of him for wanting to serve!

Why does that mean his mind is made up?

Feb 28, 2019, 10:20 AM

He wasn't practicing because he just got surgery.

Ok so maybe that's the reason but why wouldn't he have on a yellow no contact jersey? Being a grandma I don't know all the designations on these jersey colors.

He is probably leaving. Everything has pointed to that thus far. I just wouldn't totally count him out just yet.

As an 11A on the Army side, I couldn’t agree with you more.

Kid needs to understand the militay will be there for him for another decade. You only get one chance at college football.

My soldiers are lucky I love them. Every time I hear a crayon eating joke I want to kill myself.

But I would hate to be so selfish and make them go through more R3SP training.

I see both sides. I went through OCS and Basic School at Quantico too and would not try and dissuade Garret from starting his military career. He has played at the highest level and has two National Championship rings, so there is really no more for him to do athletically. It is just as important for him to stay healthy for a military career as those players (particularly underclassmen) who move on to professional careers. From a selfish standpoint, I would like to see him back, but I sure can't say he needs to stay for my or others satisfaction.

I agree. When did you go through TBS?

Long time ago. I was in the 59th OC in Quantico and out class started in March of 1969, so I started Basic School in the middle to end of May 1969. From there I went to Camp Lejeune to Combat Engineer School and left for Viet Nam on Christmas Day 1969 ...... lot of stuff packed into 9 months!

I have a theory about Williams. I think he is waiting for a decision on Galloway's appeal. If Galloway wins, Williams goes. If Galloway loses, Williams stays. Team ahead of self like Wilkins & Ferrell.

Hard for me to understand a decision on his part to immediately go into the Marines, something he will have the next 20 years to do. He only has one more year to once again lay on a national-championship collegiate football team, something he could treasure the rest of his life. This not an either/or situation. He can do both. Don't understand the rush.
