Nov 18, 2013, 12:11 PM

to go to elon, for ANY sport. we have to outdraw them ( not to mention be the better team), right?

Elon has a darn good soccer program....

Nov 18, 2013, 12:16 PM

and they just won the SoCon regular season championship and the tournament championship for the third consecutive year.

In the most recent collegiate soccer polls, Elon was ranked ahead of Clemson in all of the polls.

Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.

and that would equate to where/what in the acc ?

Nov 18, 2013, 12:20 PM

that's about like the socon's basketball champion though too, right. i mean they may be a good team, but it's not near the same level of competition.

Clemson lost to Furman earlier this year....

Nov 18, 2013, 12:26 PM

while Elon defeated Furman. Clemson also tied a pretty darn good Wake Forest team that Elon beat.

They beat 2 top 10 teams in Coastal and Wake

Looks like they deserve respect at 15-4-2

i m not dissing them, and admitted knowing nothing about

Nov 18, 2013, 1:31 PM

soccer. i will ask again though, wouldn't we bring more fans than they would. i thought riggs was a very nice soccer field/facility. am i mistaking? or, is money not an issue ( in baseball, teams bid on host sites). i am really asking these as serious questions, not just kidding around.

Soccer isn't like football. Soccer isn't an expensive sport.

Nov 18, 2013, 1:45 PM

Being good at soccer doesn't take much. Smaller schools are competing on a fairly even monetary playing field with larger schools since equipment costs are fairly low and the scholarship burden isn't what it is for football.

The Southern Conference has some top teams, nationally speaking. That isn't new. Winning the SoCon in soccer three years in a row, as Elon has done, is very impressive. Doing this means you are definitely a legit top 15-20 team. Historically, Furman is also a nationally relevant team and has had many competitive games against Clemson over the years. Losing to them in soccer isn't embarrassing at all.

The NCAA soccer tournament is seeded in terms of perceived strength of teams, much like the basketball tournament is. The higher seeded team hosts the game in the earlier rounds, regardless of other factors like stadium size. You are correct that Riggs Field is a really good soccer facility, and is probably nicer than Elon's.

They didn't when I played....

Nov 18, 2013, 2:42 PM

and unless that has changed, hosts sites are based on tournament seedings.
