He was good at Clemson but even I am shocked at what he's doing in Arizona. In my opinion he's a top 5 back.
What you say?

Ellington is the best RB Clemson has had...

...in a long time. James Davis was one of my favorite players while I was at Clemson (and of all time), and James, IMO, was a better RB than Spiller. This is just from a true rushing perspective. I thought JD was much better running the ball than Spiller. That said, I thought Ellington was better than Spiller as a pure RB when Ellington was playing his first year (this is compared to Spiller as a junior or senior). It looked blatantly obvious to me. I also thought that Ellington was better than Davis. Ellington was underutilized during his time with our Tigers. He was plagued with injuries, though. It's too bad that both Davis and Ellington were hampered by injuries over most of their time at Clemson. If they'd been healthy, some of those games would have come out better for the good guys. Ellington is still having trouble with nagging injuries, but he's powering through. Hope he can one day get to 100%.
Short answer to your question: I'm a little surprised at how well Ellington has been, but I'm more surprised that he didn't get buried on a roster somewhere to never get to show what he can do... which is play some #### football.
Disclaimer: Spiller was the best athlete/football player at Clemson I've ever seen. I just think, as far as running the ball, Ellington > Davis > Spiller.
GO TIGERS!!!!!

He is an awesome back. We had no idea how to properly use him.

Look at it this way. Andre Ellington isn't the reason Andre Ellington didn't get more touches.
Did his hand miraculously get better, or has he just been properly implemented in the passing game?
His ability as an all purpose back is critical in today's NFL.

Ellington was a very poor receiver until his senior year. I believe that was the reason he came back for his senior year and it was a wise move on his part.

He was only a poor receiver (presumably, based on how he just kind of "turned it on" when he got to AZ) because him being a receiver was never really a priority in the offense. Napier's ZBS and single back sets nor Chad's SMS really emphasized him as a receiver.
That's no one's fault --- he played with Sammy and Nuk and Tajh. I don't know if he just had some bad practices at Clemson catching footballs or if the coaches just didn't know how to use him in the passing game (as others have said).
Either way, glad to see him do good things at the next level.

Hard to say. I have him in the 5-10 range which is still pretty impressive.

I agree with most of the posts here. I'm pleasantly surprised at how well he's doing and am very happy for him. I agree that he was under-utilized, and I rarely remember him catching balls. I seem to recall him being a little nicked up alot, nothing too serious, but made we wonder if it would hurt his draft stock.
But yes, I thought he seemlessly filled in after Spiller. I too loved J Davis, and really thought he'd be a good pro. Maybe Ellington was surrounded by so many great athletes. Someone mentioned thinking Spiller was the best athlete Clemson has seen. I remember thinking that until I saw Sammy play a few games.
Bottom line, there's a ton of talent coming out of Clemson and it's great. I think DW is inline to be a top 10 pick soon (hopefully in 4 years, not 3)
