Clemson's Brent Venables could be nation's top coordinator

A year ago, Clemson had the best defense in the country. Then the Tigers said goodbye to stars like Stephone Anthony, Vic Beasley Jr. and Grady Jarrett. Now, Clemson once again has among the best units in the country -- second overall, according to ESPN’s defensive efficiency metric.
This might seem like a minor miracle, given Clemson’s myriad losses on that side of the ball from 2014, but as SB Nation points out, it was the one guy Clemson kept that makes all the difference, and it might be time to start looking at Brent Venables as the nation’s best defensive coordinator.

The S&P+ rankings go as far back as the 2005 season. In those 10 seasons. Venables has coached seven defenses that ranked in the top 10. The others ranked 17th, 34th and 12th.
Venables' 2014 Clemson defense was perhaps his shining achievement. The Tigers finished second nationally in S&P+ and sent four players to the NFL, including first round selections Vic Beasley (DE) and Stephone Anthony (LB).
After Clemson lost five defensive starters, nearly all of them foundational pieces, the assumption was the Tigers would fall a good ways in 2015 and be forced to rely on playing solid but not elite defense. But now the defense ranks fourth in S&P+ without a particularly imposing opponent left on the regular season schedule.
The piece goes into some nice detail on the scheme that has kept Venables’ defenses at the top of the rankings each year, and though he’s had plenty of talent to fit into that scheme -- first at Oklahoma, then at Clemson -- he’s also managed to find replacements by simply plugging and playing.
Clemson's Defense Through 9 Games
Despite losing five 2014 starters, Brent Venables' unit hasn't missed a beat:

Take 2015 as a prime example. The defense lost all six of its primary starters from last year’s front along with two starting defensive backs. It also saw preseason injuries and attrition cost it a top nickel back and backup defensive end, and tackle D.J. Reader was out for the first six games of the season. So what has happened?
By virtually any metric, Clemson’s defense this season is as good or better than last season.
That’s a pretty impressive accomplishment given the Tigers’ schedule and personnel attrition, but Venables has always found ways to win. Clemson knows what a gem it has in its superstar coordinator, and after this season, the rest of the country will be well aware, too.

We just have to hope he loves Clemson so much he won't want to take a HC job somewhere else because everybody will be after him.

I say give him a 10 yr contract worth 3 mill a season with incentives.
That would be hard to turn down.

Since he already makes close to 1.5 mil. If 15,000 people gave $100/yr, we could give him a raise to put him at 3 mil. I'd be down if he asked for it, haha!

The fact that he cut his teeth on having to defend the spread in BIG12 all those years is how we've leaped into the college elite because all of these southern and east coast teams are all novices at adapting the spread and he can destroy the game plan of a wanna be. Perfect timing for him to come to Clemson when he did...
