SI Article on Igwebuike

Where Are They Now: Donald Igwekuike converted from soccer in Nigeria to football in America, won a national title at Clemson and made it to the NFL. Then an improbable mix-up cut his career short.

I am glad things turned out well for him. Never knew what happened to him after the trial. I made the comment going into 1981 that Clemson would win 9-10 games and maybe all of them since Danny Ford wouldn't play for a 45 yd field goal not knowing how good Igwebuike was going to be!

Thank you for posting. As a lifelong Clemson fan and a HS kicker in the late 80's, I was a huge fan of his. Hated to see his career end the way it did.

The only Swahili that Danny knew, “ Iggy, kick the piggy”! That’s all he needed

Thanks for posting. I would have missed that

Why do dogs always race to the door when the doorbell rings? It's almost never for them.

Greetings my friend, Jah bless!

Re: SI Article on Igwebuike - Memories

As a freshman in 1979, I roomed at Holtzendorff YMCA where I became friends with Damien Ogunsuyi, Arthur Ebunam and a handful of Nigerian futballers. All good guys. We had some good times playing quarters and drinking suds as pregame for Friday nights. Nnambdi Nwkocha (sp) was a freshman that year - what a player. And Frank Cumle Awesu, 27 yrs old, and a former Mr. Africa in soccer was in my Latin II class. Smart guy - a 27 year old junior or sophomore. Seriously dignified guy especially compared to this 18 year old #### raiser at the time. As for Donald Igwebuike, the guy could flat out kick. Saw him sprint down the soccer field 40-50 yards one time in an early 80's game with the ball balanced on his head (flat top haircut) and not moving. Amazing. Great memories.

Nnamdi Nwokocha was a great soccer player. Loved watching him. Sorry to say that he passed away in 2009 from Meningitis.

I had Arthur Ebunam in my freshman physics class (Pa Bishop). He (Arthur) was a really nice guy, lots of fun. Not so much Pa Bishop.

Danny Ford had a knack for finding kickers.
