Don Munson's call of the winning play was the best...
Jul 11, 2017, 6:21 PM
|
|
And it isn't even close.
I realize there's not a lot of love for Munson here, and to each their own. But his call was spot on, it was passionate, and it was without question the best of any that happened.
People say he doesn't always paint a picture like he should. Fair enough, I don't listen to the radio enough to argue that point. I'm usually either at the game, or watching on TV.
But I dare anyone to tell me how he could have painted a better picture or done a better job of the call:
"Alright boys I'm just tellin' ya, six seconds left, you don't have a whole lot of time to spend on this...
Six seconds left, 1st and Goal, at the two.
Empty backfield, Watson goes shotgun. Ball on the left hash, wide side of the field to the right.
Watson takes the snap, rolls right, flips it in the end zone...
HUNTER RENFROW CAUGHT IT...TOUCHDOWN, TOUCHDOWN, TOUCHDOWN!
With a second left, Watson hits Renfrow and Clemson grabs a 34-31 lead and is one second away from the second National Championship in School history!"
For all the Munson haters, you're wrong on this one. Amazing call, couldn't have done it any better.

I don't know if you're being serious or not, but I was definitely a fan of "Orange in the end zone."
As expected, many on here hated that as well. Some folks just wanna ##### about something.

Can you tell me why? Serious question, and similar to my question about Munson.
Can you actually say what it was about it that was bad? It was unique, it was exciting, it was his calling card which is important in radio broadcasting.
I just don't understand why people are so critical other than: "He's not Jim Phillips."

Care to elaborate? Because I beg to differ. Everyone seems to like that call, and I found it bland and not informative.
In comparison to Munson, who gets heat for not being informative or passionate enough, McDonough's call was weak, and sounded like he was just calling another game.
I think people have in their heads that our announcers suck since JP, and I believe that's absolute crap.
But I'm truly open to why you feel differently, if you care to state your case with detail.

Listen to an entire game, it's embarrassing. Sounds like a Belton Honea Path JV game. I might be old fashioned though I grew up listening to JP and Larry Munson and Al Ciraldo and Wes Durham.
As bad a DM is however, he is 100 times better than that idiot Todd "Burn Lounge" Ellis.

I wasn't talking about an entire game. I was, and very specifically singled out, the game winning call. I even said that I don't listen enough to argue against his overall announcing.
So, now that we're on the same page. Munson's call of the game winning TD in the Natty was leaps and bounds better than any other. Period.

On that ONE PLAY it's a small miracle he didn't screw it up. I like to listen to real professionals, or at the very least someone that's played the game.

As did I, in case that was an attempt to belittle me and assume I didn't attend. The moments after that touchdown I spent with my father and brother were priceless. One of the best memories of my life.
And yet, I can still recognize a good call when I hear it, without bias. How about you?

I tried this at the CFB HOF in Atlanta, with prompts on a play I have seen multiple times, and I am experienced in public speaking to a point. And...I sucked horribly.
Which is why I have appreciation for the difficulty of those guys jobs.

I wouldnt say Mcdonoughs was weak, but you are right that it sounded like any other game for him. I liked Munsons call because he is our guy. Sounded like he had more heart and soul into it. I also like the Eli Gold call. The defeat in his voice is music to my ears.

No problem with your breakdown at all...

I like Munson anyway. However, you must realize that the very best callers no the beauty of silence, that is, when not to babble, but let the crowd do the talking after the big moment. Munson doesn't know how to do this (yet) and has room to grow here. I refer you to the very best, such as Sean McDonough - look up his call when Michigan State blocked the Michigan punt, and listen to the call, esp. right after the big play - silence for a while. Also, Vin Scully of the Dodgers was hug on this - not talking too much. This is the most difficult thing for an announcer to do. I believe, on this note, our Clemson boys could not quit babbling right after Renfro caught the ball, and it wasn't just munson it was also Rodney williams who couldn't remain quiet.

Thank you for actually backing up your point. The national championship call I will stand by. But you articulated very well reasons why Munson could be better. Much better.
Mr. McDonough's reputation is obviously good. And I'm sure that's why he's one of the premier announcers in the nation.

It's just that your son sounds like someone who should be giving a book review on the solar system or how to bake a cake, Mrs. Munson. Im sure Don was a stud back in his elementary school days but his overall perception of the game and what is going on is just that, elementary.

If the best really is the standard, Clemson will have a new person in the booth with Rodney Williams soon anyway and we can all quit trashing Munson. I'm sure he's a good guy, just no business being in sports.
