Do the OCs know that the goal is to score every possession?

Sep 9, 2018, 8:50 AM

I really felt like we could have scored on almost every possession last night. We have what I call throw-away plays and drives where we don't use the talent that the coaches have worked so hard to recruit. I don't understand how you don't try to get Higgins, Ross, ETN, Galloway, or you-pick-the-name involved on every play. It might be O-Line issues or just basic conservative mind-set...whatever it is, it sure is frustrating, though.

AND...If we are going to use two QBs, then I would hope that our play calling is to the strengths of each of the players and not an attempt to out-smart the defense just for the sake of trying to catch them off guard. We have too much talent to try to overthink!

If you were an AD, and fired anyone on this staff...

you’d be fired, and never work in this business again.

I do agree with your assessment of not tailoring the play calling. If you know one of the QBs strugggles with the deep ball, why waste a down taking a shot down field and then only have a two down possession to attempt to convert for a 1st down. If you know his strength is RPO, set up the play calling for that. Use our backs more and let him throw intermediate passes. Our play calling seemed out of synch all night but I think using 2 QBs does that. Makes it hard to get into a rhythm and figure out what is working against the defense.

NO - the goal on every possession is not always to score

Why would you even think that? CLEMSON has been doing this for years. Get the lead, and force the opponent to make miracle plays in a short period of time to attempt to beat us. It has worked for years and is a tried and proven strategy.

Anyone that remembers Dean Smith and the Four Corners defense (and Phil Ford) knows it used to work in BBall too. Once UNCheat took the lead late in the game, they went to Four Corners and it was basically over for the opponent. That's what our strategy looks similar to.
