Serious but perhaps foolish question

Aug 23, 2017, 8:49 PM

As someone who watches tv only for sports, why do I want to buy a smart tv? What's the advantage.?

Thanks I was hoping that was an option.. what else?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Don't buy a TV for the "smart" features.

Aug 23, 2017, 9:44 PM

TV manufacturers are slow to update firmware, and third party app makers are slow to roll out updates for Smart TVs.

You can easily get every Smart feature you need via a device like the Firestick, FireTV, or Apple TV.

Samsung TV models seem to last the longest and be the most reliable.

Very useful during baseball season when only espn app was showing games.

Less wires

I use Chromecast, even though I have a smart TV. I run the WatchESPN app on my iphone and cast to the 4K Smart TV. Works great - NO WIRES.

Netflix is integrated and if you have X1 from Comcast

Aug 23, 2017, 8:55 PM

You can review Rotten Tomatoes reviews real time on any TV show or movie in the channel guide. You also have real time scoring updates on a side screen while watching football games on Saturday.

Smart TV has WiFi and all the apps for streaming services off your internet.

prefer the chromecast, but Roku and Amazon fire are good as well...The TV companies don't upgrade their firmware as often and when apps update, you will LOSE them...I have an older Samsung(2012) and when it updated, I lost the HBOGO and Youtube apps

Do not buy a smart tv

Aug 23, 2017, 9:13 PM [ in reply to Re: Serious but perhaps foolish question ]

Buy a non smart tv and an Amazon fire stick. You will save a lot of money and have better results.

But where can I find dumb TV?

It's seems the market is saturated with smarts and dumbs are harder to find.

Don't know what specs you are looking for, but Best Buy

Aug 23, 2017, 9:38 PM [ in reply to Re: Serious but perhaps foolish question ]

has a Samsung 55 inch Smart with 120 refresh rate, not 4K, for $499. I don't know your provider, but DirecTV has no 4K programming. I bought one two weeks ago, when they were $549, and it has a great picture. I couldn't find a better price anywhere than Best Buy.

I would recommend getting a 4k TV... The programming isnt there yet but it is coming.

Youtube is great for rewatching old games for free without commercials and comes preloaded on most smart tv's but amazon fire is my favorite way to make a dumb tv a smart tv for a whole lot less money. Be sure to note that your streaming with either one is only gonna be as good as your broadband speed. Good luck!

Seriously good deal on this one right now on Amazon...

Aug 23, 2017, 10:42 PM

Roku built in, 4k, 55 inches....seems to get good reviews. For the price, I'd do it in a heartbeat if I needed one. I have a smaller one similar to this (not 4k) I bring to the back porch to watch games in the fall and it's been great for 2 years.

Best Buy has it for the same price. And they'll deliver it for free. Just got mine hooked up and it is awesome!

Personally, I pass on the "Smart" tv's.........

Aug 24, 2017, 8:22 AM

Buy a dumb TV and use the money saved to buy an android box with kick a$$ cpu and RAM. The hardware is better and the android platform has more opportunities to expand my entertainment pleasure.

I have never been impressed with the "smart" in smart tv's.......

I watch a lot of Netflix, Youtube, and Hulu stuff using my Smart TV. You can easily watch all the existing CLEMSON replays on Youtube.

There are so many ways to skin this cat though. Just pick one.

Smart TVs are typically very ###### compared to stand alone boxes or devices.

I have a Samsung Smart TV that I use none of the smart features on but instead use my Fire TV.

Aug 25, 2017, 7:48 AM

... which is probably overkill, but the TV did not have the ESPN app, and I wanted to watch the baseball games during the NCAA tournament. LOVE having both, though. I feel I'm covered for pretty much anything.
