Dinner in Charlotte

Oct 31, 2019, 8:18 AM

Gentlemen and THOTS,

The boy's pop warner team is playing in a bowl game on the south side of Charlotte on Saturday. The game is at 9AM, which means a 7:30 arrival time, and a 6:00AM leave time for me.... with the two kids... with no wife... I think I'll stay in the area on Friday night to keep from having to do that.

Dinner recommendations on the south end of CLT? I'm thinking BBQ would be a good call.

Mac's Speed Shop?

Other suggestions?

Things that aren't BBQ, butt are too good to pass up?

TIA

For your troubles:

F Mac’s....go to Bill Spoon’s.

Most legit eastern NC whole hog bbq in the Charlotte metro.

When you get there, go get some prices chicken coop fried chicken and sit on your tailgate and watch them roll up the sidewalks downtown at 6pm. It’s awesome.

Bill Spoon’s closes at 3 on Friday.

Oct 31, 2019, 8:38 AM

But those bottomless hushpuppies...

If BBQ is the call, I'd suggest BBQ King on Wilkinson Blvd.

Maybe we'll do something else on Friday night and grab lunch at Bill Spoons after the game. They got beer at Bill Spoon's?

They do a righteous Cuban there.

I also like BBQ King, and with two small kids in tow,

he can park around Wilkinson and Remount and just walk everywhere. Wilkinson just keeps getting safer as nighttime comes around.

Oct 31, 2019, 8:46 AM

Mac's is overrated. It's just loud and busy and the food is just meh IMO. I haven't been up that way in a while, but last time I was, I enjoyed Soul Gastrolounge. The pork belly tacos are nice.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Agree on Mac's.

Oct 31, 2019, 8:52 AM

If I'm going to the area where Mac's is, I'm probably going to end up at Southbound next door instead. We tried to go to Soul Gastrolounge and had reservations, and it ended up being a train wreck so we left. Haven't been back since. You get ONE chance with me...because there are plenty of good places to eat in Charlotte. Plus, that's not exactly where I would take a couple of elementary school age kids. AT ALL.

ringofhonor-rhtig.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Mac's is very gross

Oct 31, 2019, 8:52 AM

You wanna get out of town? Go to Rock Store BBQ in Stallings.

Or, better yet...

Texas.

ringofhonor-rhtig.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Listen, youre a nice man. I like you. Hell, I love you

Oct 31, 2019, 9:08 AM

But brisket, is not barbecue.

badge-donor-05yr.jpgringofhonor-clemsonrulez08.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Please forgive me, @IneligibleUser

Gonna give you that.

Oct 31, 2019, 9:10 AM

Since I've had the very same argument with folks in Texas on the subject. Which does about as much good as trying to explain that barbecue is not a verb to an Ohioan.

ringofhonor-rhtig.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I really like brisket, when done right it is hard to beat

Oct 31, 2019, 9:29 AM

BUT... it aint pork.

When at Red's family reunion in california, everyone kept saying they were going to barbecue at night. When I introduced myself, I made it a point to state that barbecue is a noun, not a verb and it does not apply to a grill or smoker.

badge-donor-05yr.jpgringofhonor-clemsonrulez08.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Please forgive me, @IneligibleUser

Oh, another suggestion......

Oct 31, 2019, 8:53 AM

This might be my ideal solo Dad-night in Charlotte if no music is involved.

Go to the Park 10 lanes. Bowl. Enjoy craft beer. Enjoy the food that's gotten some serious regional recognition and is not the usual frozen bowling alley bar food.

http://www.rollten.com/

When finished, walk over to the Moosehead tavern for a beverage and some local color. If still hungry, get a dozen donnie's bee sting wings (charred on the grill post-frying).

http://www.mooseheadgrillcharlotte.com/#drink-here

Go to the hotel and snooze.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpgringofhonor-obed.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

oops, just saw you had kids in tow. Still suggest

Oct 31, 2019, 8:55 AM

bowling, 86 the Moosehead...not a kid friendly dive at night.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpgringofhonor-obed.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Park 10 on a Friday night.

Oct 31, 2019, 8:58 AM [ in reply to Oh, another suggestion...... ]

That'll teach the kids a stern lesson in patience, for sure. Kids should definitely learn strong waiting skills at an early age!

ringofhonor-rhtig.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

you can book a lane can't you?***

ringofhonor-rhtig.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

True, true. Ok, I'm dropping out of the thread now.

All my 6+ year old Charlotte knowledge has been exhausted.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpgringofhonor-obed.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Midwood Smokehouse has good BBQ.

Oct 31, 2019, 9:08 AM

Parking in Midwood can be a challenge, but at least you're only a block from the Thirsty Beaver, so there's that. I'd also suggest JJ's Red Hots. I haven't been but everyone I know that has raves about it. It's on my list of places to get to, and it's kid-friendly and has good beer and usually live music.

ringofhonor-rhtig.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I essentially live in Southend and have some for ya

Oct 31, 2019, 9:18 AM

Seoul Food Meat Co. is a must for a different BBQ experience. Its American cuts of meat (ribs, pulled pork, brisket, pork belly) and sides all with an Asian-Southern American fusion. They have a full bar with great cocktails, local beer, and also lots of Asian drinks.

Its not a traditional Korean BBQ, that's next door at Let's Meat which I also highly recommend.

http://www.seoulfoodmeatco.com/

Let's Meat is traditional Korean BBQ where you cook the meat at your table. Its a great experience. All you can eat in a 2hr window. Meat sweats come free.

https://letsmeatkbbq.com/

Another spot in Southend that is newish to the area is Barcelona Wine Bar. Its quickly become one of my favorite spots. Mostly tapas (changes daily) though they do have incredible paella as well. Best wine list, especially for Spanish wines, in CLT.

I'm not sure if those places are particularly kid-friendly

but I'M dang sure making note of them for myself!

ringofhonor-rhtig.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Barcelona would not be kid friendly but the

other two certainly so! Our kids (4 and 6) love both. At Seoul, their favorites are chicken wings and bao buns. At Let's Meat, they like the beef bulgogi.

badge-donor-05yr.jpgbadge-ringofhonor-conservativealex.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We really like Malabar uptown for Spanish tapas.

Oct 31, 2019, 9:33 AM

Neither of us have much of palate for wine, but the food has always been stellar. It's also shockingly reasonable on price, which is a bit unusual for uptown in general.

ringofhonor-rhtig.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'm having Mac's for lunch tomorrow. Picking it up at 11
