Difference between this year and 2011

Oct 27, 2015, 4:33 PM

Is simple Coach BV and DW4.
That's the difference in a good team to now a great team.
We have a top 5 D and a future 1st round QB.
No chance pups none what so ever!

another difference is that the small band of upperclass leaders

that we have - Kearse, Boulware, Norton, Alexander, et al -

are all guys that are used to winning and expect to win.

In 2011, we had guys coming off the uproar of 2008, the surprise but letdown against USuCk in 2009, and the losing season of 2010. The upperclassmen here then did not know how good they could be, nor how to consistently prepare for winning.

When I see these guys practice, I keep hearing one old song from BTO coming through - "taking care of business".

These guys do have a certain look about them that wasn't there in 2011 - I hope they keep it.

I agree, we had as much talent but they didn't know how to be great.
Boyd was a good QB but could get rattled, so far DW shakes it off.

we'll see for sure....

DW hasn't had to lead a 4th quarter comeback yet, and that's a fire you have to walk through to truly be tested.

The schedule's hurting us now as teams like Mich St, Ohio St, and Bama are all learning how to fight through the fear of losing inherent in those situations.

Somewhere along the way, we're likely going to have to do that too.

The Louisville game

close game yes, but not even a 2nd half comeback...

Oct 27, 2015, 5:11 PM

the team has led from the start in all games so far.

Other Top 5 teams haven't had that luxury.

But who knows: maybe we'll beatch-stomp everybody in the 1st quarter all the way through the Playoff....

Well as soon as we went down DW took it right down the field.
A 3 and out there would have been big for the cards

Main reason we have not had to make major 4th quarter or 2nd half comebacks are because of our Defense. We have been able to prevent teams from scoring a whole lot. So far this year, we are averaging giving up only 14.3 points per game.

In 2011, we had a poor defense, and we often had to rely mainly on outscoring teams to win. For example, we would be trailing at halftime and then have to rally in the 4th quarter to win (e.g. 2011 Maryland, 2011 Wake Forest games, etc.). We had thought of ourselves as a "second half team."

We can play "conservative" when we want (that's Latin for pound them). Actually, we can play whatever we want against however they want to play, on both sides of the ball.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

lol... you mean we don't have to have a 235lb QB to make 3rd&1?

Oct 27, 2015, 4:58 PM

I agree we're better this year; not dominant, but better than 2011 for sure.

lots if experience on that line, but not many hitters...

The whole mentality of the team

Oct 27, 2015, 5:03 PM

It goes well beyond 2 people. There's an entrenched culture that was in its infancy in 2011.

So you think if we swapped out TB for DW and KS for BV

Oct 27, 2015, 5:17 PM

we would've been one of the best teams in the country that year? I'm not buying that at all. Sure they are both upgrades at their respective positions, but there are plenty of other reasons that we are better now. We've upgraded the talent and depth on the defensive side of the ball substantially since 2011 for one thing.
