Dexter McCleon vs Cole Stoudt

Oct 29, 2014, 12:20 AM

Jar my memory. Dexter was the worst option we had at QB I can remember. Is cole worse?

Oct 29, 2014, 1:05 AM

It was Ken Hatfield's idea.

Re: 1993.

Oct 29, 2014, 9:20 AM

That 1993 won 9 games with an offense that was much more painful to watch than this year's since DW got hurt. Every game was 16-13, until the Peach Bowl, which was 14-13. It shows the desperation of the times that both Dexter and Patrick were NFL defensive players (and Dex won a Super Bowl playing CB) that played extensively at QB.
Louis Solomon is another one that I believe was a highly regarded kid coming to Clemson at that time that never seemed to pan out. Go Tigers!

Richard Moncrief.

Re: can't jar your memory on this...

Oct 29, 2014, 11:42 AM

Not really, I just knew that it wasn't Dexter, the QBs were Sapp, Solomon and Moncrief... I didn't have time to pull rosters and box scores but I see someone else did get it right for us.
Dexter was a two way player in high school, but he immediately went to defense because Sapp was the highest rated QB of the three that Hatfield was sure to help us run a more pro style offense. Moncrief, Solomon, and Dexter were "short" guys.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Dexter McLeon absolutely DID play QB for Clemson

Oct 29, 2014, 1:15 PM

It was a desperation experiment by Ken Hatfield to "jump start" the option because Patrick Sapp was not panning out.

McLeon was a DB for most of his career, but Hatfield lined him up at QB that last year.

badge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Dexter was an excellent option qb

Oct 29, 2014, 6:58 AM [ in reply to can't jar your memory on this... ]

I Remember him discussing a touchdown after beating the ##### in Cola...said we lined up to run the option down on the 4 yard line and he saw that the d was out of position. Said he started smiling pre-snap and was able to homer trot into the end zone.

West moved him to defense the next year...good for DM's career but bad for Clemson W-L IMO.

Dex came to Clemson as a qb. Same as Chansi Stuckey (he scored final td in 63-17 win on qb draw) and CJ Gaddis.

As far as bad qbs, Dechane Cameron was pretty bad. Kyle Parker was really bad after he mailed it in. Stoudt, unfortunately, has gone full Slade Nagle.

Yes. Yes he was. He just happened to be qb of the most talented team in the country. Same could be said for Rodney Williams. Won tons of games.....all. due to supporting cast. Kinda like Cole is doing.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Williams was a very good game manager

Oct 29, 2014, 4:08 PM

not the most talented QB in the world, but he didn't make a ton of mistakes and turnovers.

What he did in high school did not work out for him at Clemson even as YOU put it "...he played DB for us. But he was put back on offense for the SOuth Carolina game..."

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That he started at QB for Clemson in 1993 and not just SCAR

Oct 30, 2014, 11:10 AM

What is your point in saying that he "played DB for Clemson" over and over. Everyone knows that most of his career at Clemson was at DB, but he was a highly regarded option QB in HS and he did in fact play QB at Clemson.

badge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

At 1 point we had more former QBs in the NFL than anyone

Oct 29, 2014, 8:16 AM [ in reply to can't jar your memory on this... ]

they were just all playing different positions.

Re: Dexter McCleon vs Cole Stoudt

Oct 29, 2014, 12:41 AM

He is by far the worst I have seen at Clemson since I remember watching in the Nelon Green days.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Hmm, I would think we had worse during the Tommy West era?

Oct 29, 2014, 2:08 AM

Thankfully, I missed most of that.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't remember the Tommy West QBs being all that terrible

Oct 29, 2014, 4:15 PM

Solomon was OK, Nealon Green was pretty good, Streeter seemed like he was fine when he was healthy, but during those years the QBs didn't have much talent around them, so they may have just looked good in comparison to their teammates.

Re: Dexter McCleon vs Cole Stoudt

Oct 29, 2014, 2:31 AM

Some of the worst days were during the Hootie Ingram years . I can remember on homecoming Duke kicker made a last second field of 57 yds. I think . He kicked 6 that game to barely ruin homecoming . That unfortunately jars my bad memories . But within a decade,we would reach the ultimate in college football .

Re: Dexter McCleon vs Cole Stoudt

I think Hootie even took away the most exciting 25 seconds in football........

Re: Dexter McCleon vs Cole Stoudt

Oct 29, 2014, 8:22 AM

No comparison! Dexter was one of the best athletes I've ever seen playing on a poorly coached team. He could play both sides of the ball and went pro in baseball and football. Cole is a decent backup college qb, and as a backup he's doing a good job. If he was all we had, I'd be discouraged.

Re: Dexter McCleon vs Cole Stoudt

Oct 29, 2014, 8:53 AM

Dexter was one of the many bad QB’s that played when I was at Clemson. Those were desperate times back then.

If I remember correctly, Dexter was a really athletic guy that ran really well, but was somewhat short & small for a QB and couldn’t throw with much velocity or accuracy…His running ability made him a very decent threat as an option QB however. If I also remember correctly we just had no one else on that team on offense other than Terry Smith and maybe Rodney Blunt or Terry Witherspoon.

Patrick Sapp was the worst QB I can remember…And I think Dexter actually beat him out for the job so that should say something..Patrick was just a big guy with a rocket harm that had absolutely no touch or accuracy or understanding of how to play the position. Basically, Logan Thomas before there was a Logan Thomas.

But as for Dexter vs Cole comparisons, I think Dexter would be a much better QB in Chad Morris’ offense of today than Cole is. He threw about as good (or more like equally bad as) as Cole, but his running ability would be very helpful threat right now.

Will Proctor

Oct 29, 2014, 9:11 AM

Other teams kept 8 in the box the whole last half of his only year starting

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Dexter was the #2 option QB in the country behind Tommy

Oct 29, 2014, 9:16 AM

Frazier coming out of HS.

Being that he was the starter, there were about 99 worse options just on the teams he played on.

Also, option QBs in non-option offenses typically don't do well.

Just a guess here....I think we have 2 or 3 worse options than Cole this year. We had at least that many last year. And the year before.
