Front Page Story: Morris turns up the heat

Morris turns up the heat

Offensive coordinator Chad Morris says the point has been reached in fall camp where the players don't like the coaches and the coaches don't like the play on the field What does he say about the competition at running back, at center and at tackle? Full Story »

Competition is great, but I want players focused on

Aug 13, 2013, 11:17 PM

mastering their positions and dominating the guys on the opposite sides of the lines more than screwing up and losing out to another player. But I know it's still fall practice. ;)

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I agree

Aug 14, 2013, 12:38 AM

Its time to settle into their positions and fine tune. We've got to play better o. The oline than we did in the chick bowl to beat UGA

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

UGA is nowhere near LSU's level of talent on the DL

Aug 14, 2013, 12:55 AM

They had two legitimate 1st round DEs on that team but yeah I agree that we can't have Tajh take so many hits. UGA will bring the heats from a 3-4 with Lb blitzes every play almost. Of course that gives Tajh ample opportunity to take advantage and if that Blitz doesn't get there he's going to carve them up.

Re: UGA is nowhere near LSU's level of talent on the DL

It's not a blitz if you are sending 4 and dropping 7. That's the beauty of a 3-4 when it comes to rushing the passer. You get the best of both worlds in that you get to disguise your 4th rusher while still being able to drop 7 into coverage. When you run a 4-3 the offense knows who the four rushers will be and can call protections for that. To create some confusion you have to blitz a fifth rusher, but then you can only drop 6.

That being said, UGA will play the majority of snaps out of the nickel package (read as a four man front) against Clemson's spread attack.

4 guys rushing is 4 guys rushing

Aug 14, 2013, 1:22 PM

no matter how you disguise it

Numerically speaking,

Aug 14, 2013, 3:53 PM

Yes, four rushers is four rushers, but that's about as superficial as it gets. Any football coach worth his salt will tell you how important it can be to a pass rush to keep the opposing offense guessing on who the fourth man will be.

If we even

Aug 14, 2013, 1:25 AM

See uga's 3-4 d it better be on goal line or we are shooting ourselves in the foot. 3 and 4wr all gm!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

"Bottom line: Did you get'em in the EZ? Yes or no?" Love it!

Aug 14, 2013, 8:45 AM

Chad's very last statement talking about Tajh Boyd ... sort of sums up everything about the offensive side of the game of football.

2 weeks before game 1 and there is only 1 position on the line that is set in stone. Not good for a team that has had issues on the O and D line for years.

Brad Scott brought hot shots in at RB and WR and no linemen. He left a decimated team that went 1-21. Now obviously Clemson has much more talent all the way around but the challenges are obvious on the field. If Tajh had time against the better teams Clemson may be unbeatable. Luckily Tajh has been durable because he has been battered in bigger games against good teams. Just think had he gone down where would Clemson be? That says it all, he may be the toughest player on the field but shouldn't have to prove it every game getting pounded.

Welcome to football

Aug 14, 2013, 10:42 AM

Every coach everywhere says stuff like this. Its still camp and the point is to get as much out of the players as possible through this last week. Unless a guy is far and away better than the guys behind them, you want them to know there are no guarantees.

Re: Welcome to football

Aug 14, 2013, 12:41 PM

Exactly, that's basically what I've said. Keep them all fighting for #1 until its time to move on to the #2 spot. Coach speak keeps them all motivated for that #1 spot.

While he says only 1 position on the OL is secure...

Aug 14, 2013, 11:59 AM [ in reply to Re: Front Page Story: Morris turns up the heat ]

I would bet that he knows who he will put on the field at this point. Also, I noticed that he has not menioned the LT position.

You're right but, I think that with Tajh proving his superior toughness along with his ability to do the things he does as a QB will be a plus for his future in FB.

big difference between pushing guys and simply not having anyone separate. Think about Sammy, anyone behind him capable of taking his spot. I would say that is set in stone just like the 1 line spot.

If there were decent linemen who owned the position they would say so. The scary part is what I state, the oline recruitment is catching up with Clemson and has been an issue for some time now.

Just such a hard position to project. USC has had 4 stars become busts and yet a 1 star from Aynor goes to he NFL. That position really comes down to determination and coaching not stars. Hopefully they will get it right

Coach Talk after practice is what they use to push the guys that really want those #1 spots. If Morris would have said yes we have the guys set in place. That would end it for some guys giving 110% in that heat of two a days. Morris wants everything from all the guys to start building his two deep guys. There will be two weeks left for guys to win those back up spot. If the guys knew at the beginning of fall practice who the starters were. The starters wouldn't give it everything they had to give that makes them better players. Its like the lottery ticket, you have hope that it's your ticket until after the numbers have been called. After the starters have been named, then their will be a fight for that #2 spot. But coach talk keeps everyone fighting for #1.

Let's face it, we are in a heap of trouble. People we expected to step up haven't done so. Not one running back who would be ranked in the top 30 nationally. Aside from Sammy Morris, what's happened to our other vaunted WR's? All of a sudden DE is a question mark. Not to mention the secondary. UGA by 21.

Depressing to hear the OL is going to be the same as last

Aug 14, 2013, 12:31 PM

year, with just a new Center. We really needed somebody to beat out Giff, he's just not that good. But if MacClain or Gore can't beat him out, that's just sad. It would really be nice if Battle would finally step up and take control of the LT spot, then we could move Brandon to RT.

Ideally, we'd have Battle take charge at LT, move Brandon to LT, Ryan Norton at C, Shat at RG, and then have Mac or Gore take command of the RT spot. That would be our dream OL. But it sounds like none of the young guys is taking command and we're back with Brandon at LT, Beasley, at LG, Norton at C, Shat at RG, and Giff at RT. Same line we had last year when Tajh was running for his life against quality DL's and we couldnt run block for squat in the A gap to A gap area.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The coaches want Thomas to play LG

Aug 14, 2013, 1:25 PM

Our O line was solid last year. I think they will be much improved, depending on how solid Norton will be. Have faith, young padawon

Yep! And what happens when Tajh goes down? This is not a top 20 team. Aug 31st will be painful. A lot of these players, especially in the trenches, aren't stepping up simply because they don't have the talent to do so.

Re: Front Page Story: Morris turns up the heat

"Our O line was solid last year"

Tajh is lucky to still be playing college football the way he was roughed up. The line was as bad as the D.

Get the D corrected and the line playing decently and the offense would walk it all the way to Pasadena

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You really don't know what you're talking about. But ...

Aug 14, 2013, 2:47 PM [ in reply to Re: Front Page Story: Morris turns up the heat ]

We gave up a whopping 2.5 sacks/game to virtually the same schedule we will play this year (and less sacks overall than scar). The team of course can always improve, but lets not make mountains out of molehills.
