Defense! When is the last time ...

we really had a good defense? I really want to hear your opinions. I mean a really nasty, smashmouth, bad attitude defense.
Me? I'm thinking 1989.

I'm not sure about nasty and smashmouth, but I'd take the 2009-2010 D in a heartbeat.
If you think back...we had a line of Branch, J. Jenkins, B. Thompson and Daquan Bowers....all in the NFL. McDaniel, Gilchrist and Maxwell in the secondary. Kavell Connor at LB.
I think Veneables could work with that.

100% Agree. I said the same thing a month or so ago. If this offense had that defense, think about the year we would have had.
We had a good one as it is, and even the 2 games we lost, we were ahead early, but the current D couldn't get off the field in those games and the offense wasn't on the field long enough to get out of their rut when they sputtered.
Even if we just had Bowers and McDaniel on the current D, it would make all the difference in the world.
Personally, I have nothing but good to say about BV and his scheme, I'm of the belief that all of our defensive ills comes from not having a few consistently dominating players on that side of the ball.

Last time we had a decent-good defense, we had a terrible offense.
So.. 3 years ago? 6-7 team with Napier as the OC. Da'quan Bowers and crew were pretty good on the field, most points given up was 31 in the bowl game. 18.7ppg, compared to our 24.9 we're currently giving up this year...
I mean, its not a GOOD defense, but if you give that defense to this years offense, we should be undefeated...

1990. 21 points was the highest point total allowed

only 5 games did we give up double digits in points. Also had 3 shutouts, including a shutout of the nation's #1 offense that year in Illinois

and i do not think we've had a nasty defense since '90...we've had some nasty players since then: Dawk, Keith Adams, Leroy Hill, John Leake, Anthony Simmons, etc., but i truly don't think we've had nastiness all over that side of the ball since '90 when that crew left....the '89-'90 defense, to me, was the best D we've put on the field in my lifetime....hitters all over the field, DL who penetrated constantly and DB's who came up in run support and punished folks...the LB's were ridiculous: Wayne Simmons, Levon, Ed McDaniel, Ashley Sheppard, etc.....fast, swag, hitters and created turnovers....i really believe those two years had better D than our national championship year....we were deep, we were mean, we had tons of swag and they were the best athletes and football players on the team by far.

We have had sporadic good defenses since then but with the advent of this finesse offense any chance of that happening again are zilch at least against good competition.

Thats such a cop out excuse, under urban myer florida won two national titles and had a top 15 D both years. Its possible to have a "finesse" offense and nasty D.

Meyers offense was not finesse

They had a killer run game to go with their passing game. AS a matter of fact running was what made them a physical presence as well. UF did not try and get in a track meet and score within 15 seconds. They held on to the ball with long drives that involved the running game and this let the defense rest which allowed them to have that stellar defense that they had. With us its finesse and all based off of the pass with the occasional run. The UF offense of that time period and what we run are both night and day.
