Deer Tnet... (serious)

May 15, 2013, 1:08 PM

Please wear your seatbelts. A couple of years ago, late at night I saw a van flip in front of me. There was a family inside it with the dad driving and the grandma in the passenger seat. They were both wearing their seatbelts and were fine... the mother and the 6 year old and 11 year old boy were not. I will spare the details of the injuries but I worked frantically to do what I could for them until the EMS got there and then gave them a hand until all 3 were air lifted out. With my limited medical experience I would say the 6 year old had about a 50% change of living, the 11 year old about 30% chance and the mother about a 5% chance. Thankfully they were all still alive when they left.

This past Sunday... Mother's Day, I was the first driver to come up to another wreck right outside my neighborhood. Again, the driver was wearing her seatbelt and was nearly pefectly fine... the passenger was not wearing hers... As I checked her vitals... the 16 year old girl made the last little flinch she will ever make on this world...

So please, wear your seatbelt. Even if its not for your own sake... remember there are people here that care about you. Think of what it would do to them just because you decided not to take 1 second out of your life to put on your seatbelt.

If that's getting "butt hurt", then I better quit watching Clemson sports because if I really get "butt hurt" over pointing out something, then I might really kill myself over a Clemson game.

This is getting boring though, as you've made me think about this TD way too much.

May 15, 2013, 1:33 PM

a wreck in front of our house last night and I was one of the first ones on the scene. I think everybody was wearing seatbelts -- they had all climbed out of their vehicles by the time I made it out there. The EMTs took two of them to the hospital but there didn't appear to be any serious injuries. The guy in one of the vehicles (a Clemson grad) said he couldn't believe he didn't have a scratch on him given how his truck looked.

But joetigerny, I gotta agree with satchelkrzy. Not sure if I want to be driving anywhere near you. If fact, I'm a little afraid to be even POSTING behind you ;)

May 15, 2013, 1:50 PM

I've seen five fatalities that should have been ZERO if they had their seatbelts on.

My wife used to unbuckle hers when we'd get about a 1/4 mie from the house. That's when I showed her the statistic that 50% of vehicular accidents happen within 1/2 mile of home, and 80% within 10 miles.

She now stays hitched up until the tires hit the driveway(no, she is NOT pulling the car like some of you might infer...)

car is stopped and not take it off beforehand, but you (and everyone else who uses this statistic) is misusing it. 80% of the accidents happen close to home because 80%+ of trips require one to drive that 10 miles from their home twice. Certainly, driving close to home is not any less dangerous than driving anywhere else, but it is definitely not more dangerous.

1

May 16, 2013, 7:33 AM [ in reply to I agree with you that one should wear a seatbelt until the ]

Given the amount of cars parked on the road in our neighborhood (necessitating a lot of weaving and one-way passages) and the amount of lazy/inattentive drivers who whip around curves and cut off turns, there's absolutely no way I wouldn't wear a seatbelt in my neighborhood. I've had several situations in the past few years where I just barely missed a head-on collision. I feel safer on the interstate than I do driving in my neighbhorhood.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

1

May 16, 2013, 7:56 AM [ in reply to I agree with you that one should wear a seatbelt until the ]

People drive close to home more than they drive anywhere else. Whenever you go somewhere, you're leaving from home. If 80% of accidents happen close to home, I'd bet that around 80% of the miles a person drives is within 10 miles of home. This is a statistic that can scare people, but it makes all the sense in the world.

I wonder how far from home 80% of fatal accidents occur? That would be interesting to know.

I was in an 80mph rollover accident just like that

May 16, 2013, 10:12 PM [ in reply to Re: Deer Tnet... (serious) ]

On I-95 10 years ago when an old man came across the median and almost hit us head on. We both wore seatbelts and both climbed out fine.

If you aren't wearing a seatbelt in a car, you are a complete idiot.

I have worked in emergency services for almost 24 years now and out of the thousands of wrecks I have ran I never walked away thinking "You know, they would have been OK if they didn't wear their seat belt."

I feel sure that the law of averages can eventually come to play and there will be a wreck where not wearing a seat belt will save someone's life, but in my professional experience while a seat belt will not save everybody, it will save you more often than not.
