Best War Movies of all time:
Jun 11, 2014, 12:10 PM
|
|
When we were growing up, "war movies" were considered movies involving battles during WWI and WWII. I'm going to expand this and count all movies where the main characters are involved in fighting a war on the battle field or are in some type of POW camp during a war. Casablanca and Schindler's list could technically be war movies but they wouldn't count here:
1. Braveheart 2. Bridge on the River Kwai 3. The Deer Hunter 4. Empire of the Sun 5. Patton 6. Saving Private Ryan 7. Gallipoli 8. The Hurt Locker 9. Last of the Mohicans 10. Stalag 17 11. Full Metal Jacket 12. The Great Escape 13. Glory 14. Apololyspe Now 15. Platoon

As the sequel being as good or better than the original. Home Alone 2: Lost in New York is one of America's greatest cinematic achievements.

Great list. They may not be considered "great movies"
Jun 11, 2014, 1:09 PM
|
|
but I loved "The Dirty Dozen" and "Kelly's Heroes".
While it wasn't a war movie in the classic sense, it was certainly about war: Dr. Strangelove was a great movie.

From Strangelove:
Jun 11, 2014, 4:30 PM
|
|
Strangelove's plan for post-nuclear war survival involves living underground with a 10:1 female-to-male ratio]
General "Buck" Turgidson: Doctor, you mentioned the ratio of ten women to each man. Now, wouldn't that necessitate the abandonment of the so-called monogamous sexual relationship, I mean, as far as men were concerned?
Dr. Strangelove: Regrettably, yes. But it is, you know, a sacrifice required for the future of the human race. I hasten to add that since each man will be required to do prodigious... service along these lines, the women will have to be selected for their sexual characteristics which will have to be of a highly stimulating nature.
Ambassador de Sadesky: I must confess, you have an astonishingly good idea there, Doctor.

Little known flick about the Brits during the Boer War. Pretty intense stuff. Not sure if it falls within the Top 25, but it is still worth looking up.

The opening 15 mins of Saving Private Ryan . . .
Jun 11, 2014, 3:07 PM

a whole movie's worth of emotions in that first bit.
Had to remind myself to keep breathing the first 10 times I saw it.
Band of Brothers . . . not sure this counts.

Generation Kill, while not a movie, nailed what it was like to be in a combat arms unit. I thought it was a great miniseries.
