Dabo vs. Nick Saban

Dabo has been head coach for 52 games. Through 52 games: Winning percentage: 61.5% Conference Championships: 1
Nick Saban through his first 52 games: Winning percentage: 57.7% Conference Championships: 1 (at Toledo in his first year). Best finish in Big 10 at Michigan State during that time: 5th place

Nick Saban took over an SEC team fresh off NCAA sanctions. Dabo took over an ACC team fresh off 9 wins.

Yeah we all know those SEC sanctions are very tough to recover from. When you got boosters with deep pockets it don't take long to hire errr, I mean sign some good classes.

Good comparison......I support Dabo....

..and my hope is that he will "grow" into the type of coach we want at Clemson. In my job career I've been everything from a tractor driver to a public school teacher and I've seen a lot of people develop into top notch workers when a lot of people didn't give them the chance.

I can't believe you're comparing Dabo and nick saban..everyone knows nobody can beat an sec team except an sec team and that his winning percentage is lower because of the grueling, tough, schedule they play every game..blah blah blah

One MAJOR difference
Sep 26, 2012, 8:13 AM
|
|
As a defensive specialist, Nick only has to make one good coordinator hire, offensive. Whoever he hires on Defense, he will just train. Dabo's is not a specialist. Therefore, to have a great team he must hire a good OC and DC (twice as tough) .

His "specialty" is recruiting, IMHO
Sep 26, 2012, 10:25 AM
|
|
The fact that he is able to recruit so well is the x-factor. Remember, we aren't and never will be in the same league as Alabama, Florida, Texas, USC (the real one), LSU, FSU, etc. All of these schools have more tradition and tremendous resources (both monetarily and fertile recruiting grounds) at their disposal. All of those schools have distinct advantages from the get go not considering the coaching staff. I agree with your premise about Dabo needing excellent coordinators but you're not giving him enough credit either.

How does that make him a better coach? Was he hired as a Human Resources Manager or as a coach. Whatever the answer, I am with you, Dabo is better than Saban, John Gruden, or anyone else in coaching. Long live Dabo!!!!!!

many more successful coaches who weren't "specialists" than those that call their own plays, etc. Even considering that, Dabo has an extensive offensive background, so if you have categorize his "specialty" it would be that.

You have to recruit well, or develop talent well, or both. If you are not very good regarding talent, you must have a coordinator who is.
You have 3 major components: Offense (scheme/coaching) Defense (scheme/coaching) Talent (raw/developed)
As a staff, you must be good at all three. Dabo and staff are exellent in regards to talent.

I guess you are pointing out that there is absolutely no correlation with coaching records and future success. I can find many coaches with records similar to Saben that ended up being flops.

highly critical of Dabo and have cited his record, performance, and shortcomings as sufficient grounds for firing him. I was just pointing out that applying that very same criteria would have resulted in Saban, who many Dabo haters worship, being fired at the same point in his career as well.

Saban took over a 0-11 Michigan State team and instantly turned it into a perennial bowl team...with the other guy's players. If MSU had been an 8-9 win team and then Saban dropped them to 6 wins, of course he should have been fired. It's a no brainer.

No it's not, and you're wrong.
Sep 28, 2012, 4:41 PM

The team Saban took over was not actually 0-11; they were 5-6 and were forced to forfiet their wins that year due to grade tampering. He turned them all the way around to 6-5-1 the next year.
Michigan St was 27-29-1 the 5 years prior to Saban (not counting the forfiets), and 34-24-1 during his 5 seasons.
In the 10 years prior to Saban, Michigan state had been to bowls 6 of those years, winning 3, so they were very accustomed to post-season bowls. In Saban's 5 seasons there he took them to 4 bowls, winning only 1.
In 5 years at Michigan St., he only finished above 5th place in the Big 10 once, never winning a conference title. In the 5 years prior to Saban, Michigan State won the conference title once and finished 3rd another time.
The bottom line is that Saban worked no miracle at Michigan St, and his record and on field performance over 5 years was a minor improvement at best.
Under those same exact circumstances, the Saban goobersmoochers who are crazy enough to suggest that Dabo is failing at Clemson would have been calling for their hero's head a few years back. That is a view that lacks perspective.
I'm not saying Saban is not a good coach, because he is; but he may be the most over-hyped coach around, and he's even better with a mind-boggling boatload of talent (imagine that).

Only problem with that is Shaw isn't the key to the offense that Tajh is, that would be Lattimore. I could have gone 20-21 last weekend against Mizzou
