Dabo QB decision in 2nd half vs Alabama un-Saban like

Jan 10, 2018, 10:07 PM

If Dabo had made same decision to sit KB as Saban did heading into 2nd half with JH would we have gotten different results with new QB?

No, because the right side of the offensive line was leaking all night and would have been leaking the same for HJ. KB was very accurate when he had time, but he can't block, throw the ball, and then go catch it also. The other issue was that the receivers were not winning the route battles early in the route and needed the line to hold up like they did for most of the second half of the season, but the right side's lack of speed, experience, and solid technique showed up again, like it did again Auburn early in the year. The main problem for the night was Tony Elliott's and Jeff Scott's decision to give up on the run early and to not run the best two backs more than 8 times (8 carries for 32 yards 4 ypc for Travis and Feaster...that helps right side because that is what they are actually good at...we had the most long runs on that side this year). Georgia never gave up on the run against Bama, even when they were only getting 2 or 3 yards because it is a heavyweight boxing match where you give the body blows in order to open up the defense for the head shots (Sony delivered those for Georgia), but our OC's are too young to understand this. Running also wears on a d-line because it makes them have to fight against weight that is leaning and pushing on them versus a line that is only trying to deflect their path to the QB. On the first interception, we had Travis in the game trying to help with pass protection, something he hasn't done well all year (typical for a freshmen), but he had just ran the ball for 9 yards on the first down (2nd and 1); why not run tempo and run the ball again to punish that d-line again instead of dropping back for a post against a d line that we had trouble blocking on the right side all night? KB did his job well enough to win ...people forget that we were driving down the field in their territory with 3 or 4 completions when that first interception occurred. QB wasn't the problem...even the second interception was a sign of how weak Deon Cain run routes versus what Watson was used to in Mike Williams...Mike wins that slant route battle and catches that ball by attacking the ball instead of allowing the DB to fight on top of him to get a hand on the ball...Mike would have caught it with his hands instead of the body to prevent the shorter CB from having an impact...that slant pass was on the money (accurate). QB wasn't the issue, which is why Dabo talked about how the line played and how the receivers were not winning the battles...even Renfrow talked about Bama not showing them anything special, just man to man that they had to go and win...which was rough at times because when they did win, the right side had KB running instantly. Georgia's o line gave Fromm all day most of the night, and he receivers feasted on that secondary. Dabo didn't have to switch QB's because KB is way better than Hurts and has proven that he can make all the throws when protected. KB needs to work on learning to read the defense more and feeling comfortable enough to call audibles himself next year because that is how Watson overcame Tony Elliott's lack of in game adjustments and lack of a feel for the game. No way a 5 star back like Feaster only gets 107 carries the entire season when he is averaging 6+ yards a carry if I am the OC...Gallman made it easier for Watson with 2 one thousand yard seasons, why not compliment KB with the same safety blanket? Summary: o line, WRs, and OC play calling...we win if those are mitigated early in the game.

You honestly believe our OC's don't understand that running the ball loosens up the defensive backfield for downfield passing ?
That isn't some sort of fan secret my man .
The truth is we were unsuccessful running it and Bama pretty much dictated what we could or couldn't do by playing as well as they did .
No doubt there will be other chances to have a better game , but our OC's aren't on the hook for the loss imo.

8 carries for 32 yards...4 ypc by Travis and Feaster... Our best two backs... How is that considered stopping the run? Looks like giving up on the run to only give them 4 carries when 3 times four is a first down, when that allows you to keep the defense honest while staying in front of the sticks. What coach in America wouldn't take 4 ypc against Bama? Our OC would rather KB have more carries when Travis and Feaster are much better runners... Look at the season and see who ran the ball the most. Feaster was named the starter, five star rated, averaged 6+ yards a carries all season, but carried the ball only 107 times... No, I don't think the OC's understand the personnel or the importance of a balanced attack. There was a reason Auburn didn't give up on the run and rushed for over 200 yards against Bama. Saban knew that we wouldn't trust the run because we didn't the last two years with Watson. People forget that Gallman ran for over 1000 yards twice with Watson at QB...

Jan 11, 2018, 1:04 PM [ in reply to Re: Dabo QB decision in 2nd half vs Alabama un-Saban like ]

should have had KB throwing down the field more to the younger taller receivers. That one pass to Higgins in end zone would have been td except for bama db mugging him even holding his left arm down for obvious interference. Not throwing down field was a big mistake. Bama was ready for those short play action passes and besides Cain, they had Renfrow doubled up much of game. The O coaches need to take more responsibility for their poor playcalling that led to our defeat. The D, as usual, was really good holding Bama to season low of 261 yds.

Re: Dabo QB decision in 2nd half vs Alabama un-Saban like

Jan 11, 2018, 5:22 AM

Why "try something" different when the problem wasn't qb? Sam just gave you a very lengthy former college football players perspective on the issues. Hell I've watched the game 4 times and his analysis is spot on. The not winning one on one matchups on the right side of the o line and wr were the "on field" issues. Playcalling and the continuation and hoping the "right play call" would alleviate the aforementioned is just naive.

Yes, the new qb would have been crushed because receivers got no separation, backs missed blocks and O line was bullied.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Dabo QB decision in 2nd half vs Alabama un-Saban like

Jan 11, 2018, 2:22 PM

Exactly. KB was only able to escape the rush twice for good yardage, and he is the bigger, faster QB. As for throwing down field more like the pass attempt to Higgins (who was clearly grabbed extremely early with no call), you can't throw deep without correcting the protection issue on the right side of the line... The reason for the short passes has nothing to do with KB, so I don't where these so called Clemson fans have been all year when the games were on TV or being played in the stadiums because those who actually watched the games would have seen that KB has thrown the ball deep all year when it was called and protected. You name the game and I'll give you the play or I'll give you the details for why we didn't go deep, like against teams like BC and Wake, who had a defensive game plan to keep everything in front of them, so you take what was given. If you watched the Georgia game you would have seen that their OC and offensive staff planned for an aggressive, strong defensive front, so they lined up with two tights and Max protection almost half of the game in order to provide time for their QB to get the ball down field to their big receivers on the outside our their faster receivers coming across... They were willing to send less receivers out in order to protect because they knew that Bama couldn't cover their receivers or they knew that when given protection you can find holes in their defensive secondary because you can't jam a speedy big receiver every play and not expect them to get open when given 3-4 seconds. This is the "try something different" conversation that was needed, not changing the QB. Hurts was given adequate protection, but continued to hold the ball too long because he isn't used to the spread offense and currently doesn't have the skill set to run that type of offense. Therefore, it was a great move to change to the true Freshmen QB who obviously ran a very similar style offense in high school, so it was natural for him... Kinda like throwing in Watson or KB in that offense. People forget that KB passed for 3500+ yards, 41 TDs, and 10 interceptions completing 63% while rushing for 700+ yards his senior year in high school, and he wasn't throwing to anyone who is playing major college football. Not a scrub when you consider the five star Hunter Johnson that you guys keep raving about who never completed higher than 55% in his high school career, never passed for over 2600 yards or over 28 TDs while never throwing less than 12 interceptions in a state that isn't known to be that tough to compete for a QB...SC definitely produces better defenders and coaches than the state of Indiana, so I would conclude that KB faced better talent playing 4A ball in SC. Address the line and win the game, even with the drops because there is no interception in the first place and the field position was would have been drastically different... That was the difference between us and Georgia... They protected their QB.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Agree with this: "Higgins (who was clearly grabbed extremel

Jan 11, 2018, 2:46 PM

early", yes he was mugged and obvious interference call, that really hurt our chances. More downfield passes like that should have been thrown though.
