Crownover, Erwin and Long vs Funkhouser, McKay and Rogers

May 13, 2015, 10:02 AM

Funkhouser, McKay and Rogers combined stats:
IP 232, H 180, R 87, ER 71, K's 237, BB 85, WHIP 1.14, ERA 2.75

Matthew, Zach, and Jake combined stats:
IP 214 2/3, H 179, R 74, ER 52, K's 192, BB 56, WHIP 1.09, ERA 2.18

I really believe that we have the best weekend starting pitching in the ACC.

Our hitting stats are excellent (even prior to Furman).
We just need to cut errors down and have 2 more relievers step up.

Our hitting stats are excellent?

May 13, 2015, 10:13 AM

I predict our batting average with RISP is terrible. We have struggled getting clutch hits. Last night was one of the first games I saw us fight back and not quit.

Re: Our hitting stats are excellent?

May 13, 2015, 10:31 AM

We're producing 6.5 runs a game which is excellent. Our opponents are only producing 5.0 runs a game against us.

Only 3.6 runs per game in losses

May 13, 2015, 12:26 PM

Seems like we generally win when there is run support

Clemson is 26-8 when they score at least 5 runs, 2-4 when they score 4 runs, and 0-13 when they score 3 or less.

The team is also 24-5 when they outhit their opponent, 2-18 when they get outhit, and 2-2 when the teams have equal hits.

That's interesting. It points to very few average scoring games (6-7 runs). I didn't realize that most of our games were at one side of the pendulum or the other. I guess this goes back to the Casey Stengel quote: "Good pitching will always stop good hitting and vice-versa."

Re: Only 3.6 runs per game in losses

We have lost a lot of 1 or 2 run games. This is what happens when you have poor fundamentals as a team. In close games those errors that give up runs will kill you.

Just playing devil's advocate, Clemson as allowed 46 unearned runs to score vs. 42 for Louisville.

But I doubt L-ville has lost as many 1 run games as we have and that winning run being unearned.

Yes, that's the point. Worry about creating and preventing runs, not these silly small ball arguments and anecdotal evidence.

Louisville's strength is their pitching

May 14, 2015, 10:30 AM [ in reply to Re: Only 3.6 runs per game in losses ]

when we had our series against them they came in with a bullpen ERA under 2

Re: Louisville's strength is their pitching

I agree. I envy LU's bullpen. We're not there right now with our bullpen. That really exposes us to some serious problems against FSU. FSU is the most disciplined hitting team I've seen (6.21 walks per game and a ton of foul balls = high pitch counts for almost every starting pitcher who's faced them). My point in this thread was simply that our starting pitching is excellent and our hitting is very good. We're not that far away from being a really good team (fielding and bullpen being the weaknesses). I have got to believe that we may have kids that can help us in those areas.

Re: Louisville's strength is their pitching

May 14, 2015, 10:58 AM

I don't know if I'd call our starting pitching excellent because I'm still not 100% sold on Long's ability to consistently go deep into games. I will say that weekend starting pitching definitely isn't the reason we're losing games.

I believe that they are extending Jake's pitch count a bit each week as he progresses through recovery from injury. He has made a step change this year. I love the fast pace he sets. I think it really helps the guys behind him focus.

Yes. That's why this number is all the more irrelevant. Louisville has a much better WHIP, walk rate, strikeout rate etc...in other word fewer base-runners or fewer opportunities for unearned runs.

Clemson has a horrible bullpen and an inconsistent back end of the rotation.

Clemson hits better than their average with runners in scoring position and runners on.

Don't we lead in hitting into double plays too?

May 13, 2015, 10:56 AM

We seem to do that alot.

We do hit into a lot of double plays. Whether or not it's an issue is a hot topic.

I know that it sounds crazy for me to be so excited about the prospective post season of a team that's 3 games over 0.500, but I believe this really is a uniquely gifted team. I believe that Matthew, Zach and Jake will all play for pay next year as will some of our position players.

Re: Crownover, Erwin and Long vs Funkhouser, McKay and Rogers

According to Boydsworld.com. FSU needs to take 2 out of 3 from us in order to be a top 8 seed. They're going to be tight as banjo string if Matthew beats them (and come on now - does anyone on this board think that FSU has more than a 50/50 shot in game 1?). If Zach beats them in Game 2, they will be completely deflated. Jake should be able to polish it off. The momentum will be nice going into the ACC tourney. I really do believe we can sweep.

Re: Crownover, Erwin and Long vs Funkhouser, McKay and Rogers

Just a statistical update:
Matthew, Zach, and Jake now have a combined 2.08 ERA, 1.09 WHIP, 0.219 opponent batting avg, over 233 2/3 innings. I bet that's the best of any 3 weekend starters on the same team in the country. Coaches are also allowing higher pitch counts because we are later in the season. Matthew had 124 Thursday and was allowed 131 in an earlier game this season. Zach would have completed his game Friday without the rain delay. Jake, who they've been bringing back slowly from injury, was allowed 94 today. Taylor Vetzel and Pat Krall looked good this weekend out of the pen. We still need 2 more relievers and a 4th starter. We've got guys with the physical gifts. They just need some confidence.
