he's a punishing run blocker but his pass blocking needs work.

I agree. Gore is 35 pounds below his effective playing weight, and is an average lineman at best. I've never bought in to him as a premier player. FSU will eat his lunch. I'd go with Crowder any day. He will be a star.

Having Jay be ready and good to go as a starter is a step in the right direction

As would Crowder being ready, but I'd hardly say that makes us "set" up front.

At least he'll hit someone in the mouth. He is a mountain of muscle and plays with a nasty attitude. We can't finesse FSU. Our only hope is to go jaw-to-jaw with them and play savage, physical football. We will win or lose in the trenches.

Yeah, the OL collapsed, cost us the game. Putt the big meanies in up front. We now have big RB's who can both run and block (i.e Flemming). To beat FSU we have to come out and hit them in the mouth. Boston College, a notoriously smash mouth (low on talent) team did just that, and had FSU on the ropes last year.

So, what is the story on Ryan Norton. What was his 'sickness'? Is he OK now? Does he move to another OL spot or what?

He got pushed around in the UGA game, and is somewhat undersized as center. Guillermo is 35 pounds heavier, was the top HS center in the nation coming out of HS. He was knocking people around in the UGA game. So who do you start?

Yeah, well maybe, but I don't buy it. Guillermo is simply in another league compared to him talent-wise. But that's just my opinion, and a lot of you guys are much more football savvy than me. So I'd appreciate any opinions.

I honestly don't know. I don't think Norton was ever regarded as a top offensive lineman. I'd move him to defense. He was manhandled by UGA. He could possibly have the speed to be a huge defensive end. Any input will be greatly appreciated.

Have you observed Norton's play at center? Watch the tape from the Georgia game. The guy cannot block and he does not seem to be very strong. The defensive tackles seem to over power him.

True freshman starters on the OLine are really rare

It's one of the hardest transitions from high school to college.
Plus there are a bunch of guys in front of the freshmen who have "paid their dues"

also the whole, paid their dues thing is being way over blown by fans and the media. Fact is that the true freshmen are playing and playing a lot. I like the way the staff is handling them and expect the talent to emerge as starters soon in the year.

that is debatable. he played a year of prep school ball. yes, he was a "true Fr".. but he had an extra year of maturity and competition.

and he wasn't a starter as a freshman, he was a seldom-used backup.

I thought he played almost the complete game against LSU in the ChikFilA bowl as a freshman?

He was forced into the game by an injury, and according to coach-speak, "held his own." So where is he now? According to his line coach still at 270. He didn't to hold his own against UGA.

Shaq Anthony was suspended and Giff Timothy got hurt early in the game. Gore couldn't handle RT so they moved Thomas to RT and put Battle in at LT.

Who, for instance? Battle and Gore? As underweight as they are, have they really "paid their dues" in the weight room?? They wilted against UGA, and Fla. St. will destroy them. Just my opinion. IMHO Crowder is far better than either of them.

I just don't think Norton will cut it as an OL. I do think he has a place, probably on defense. He's a tough guy, and I respect him. Just don't feel we have him in the right place. I could be totally wrong.

Got his feet wet and got very valuable game experience with his first start. Did great job against SC State. Keep up the hard work and more playing time will come.
