I have a term life policy I've had forever. The plan was to be self insured, which we are lucky enough to be able to do.

But told my wife I'd keep the policy ($600k) until kids get thru college (2.5 more years), but if I croak before then you can buy each kid a Porsche with that money! I didn't want unintended consequences, so we have not told the kids :)
