The False Public Persona of Coack K

Mar 27, 2016, 12:29 PM

It was good to beat Duke in Clemson this year, as we are used to Duke annually running up the score on our avg teams. For younger T-Netters who may look at Coach's latest incident in a vacuum, he is a win-at-all-costs competitor and a poor loser. There are many stories online (and I'm glad Samuel L. Jackson commented on the latest example of his character), so I will give an example pertinent to Clemson. In a close game some yrs ago, Clemson was leading Duke by two points and at the FT line with a few seconds left. On a missed shot, Dohntay Jones grabbed the back of Tiger center's jersey from behind, pretended to be elbowed in the face, and pulled the Tiger down on top of him feigning injury. The ACC TV announcers were aghast. They said the Tiger center was nuts because Clemson had already won the game. On the replay, the announcers apologized and admitted Jones had obviously tricked the refs. Jones picks himself up, hits two free throws and Duke wins in OT. A play that pi$$ed me off. And a play that could be marked down to Jones sneaky ingenuity - except for one thing. Duke had engineered the exact same play several yrs earlier at the end of a Clemson game, I believe pulling down Elden Campbell with similar results. Yes. Coach K is slick and not above cheating to win. It was/is a staple Duke play. K is many things, a fierce competitor, and a brilliant coach & mentor who courts the everyone-hates-Duke mentality to motivate. Yet, he is also non-stop profane browbeater of refs who will do anything to win. When he retires, he will understandably receive media praise as the greatest coach of his era, but ACC fans who have watched his act for thirty years consider him as plastic and phony as his polymer-based jet black hair dye. He is a classy winner, a consistently nasty loser, truly a hypocrite, and far from the true statesman of the game he presents himself to be.

I am no fan of ole rat face but I will pull for him any day compared to Roy Williams. I also consider his military background. At least he cared enough to coach in the Olympics as well.

"His military background" gives him a pass... BS.***

Interesting bit of information to chew on. For me.....it's the fact he lied about what he said. Shows poor character and not being willing to fess up when you have done something inappropriate. Coaches should teach that actions have consequences and that if you lie about it, things just get worse.

There is no doubt he said it. Then tries to not only deny it, but throw the kid under the bus for airing the "dirty laundry." Worthless piece of trash.

Duke...

i also remember him calling timeout at the end of our blowout win a few years ago.. just so his players could hear the crowd.

This has been my observation as well ...

Mar 27, 2016, 1:19 PM

K is a brilliant coach and a tough competitor who hates to lose, but when he does lose, he seems to be about as gracious as any top coach in college ball.

Unfortunately, his facial demeanor often creates a different impression.

Mar 27, 2016, 1:43 PM [ in reply to he has routinely praised Clemson when we have beaten ]

so many times in favor of them against us for over 30 years and our basketball coaches and AD refuse to complain about it to the ACC. So why wouldn't you praise a school that doesn't fight back against getting clearly cheated time after time, when your team benefits from that attitude of caving in to cheating.

This is simply a totally made up story and is not in any way true at all. The OP simply made up a story about Duke and Clemson and everyone took it as the truth. There is no truth at all to anything that is posted here. It is a lie.

And it is very easy to prove the original poster is telling stories.

Dohntay Jones played only 2 season at Duke after playing 2 seasons at Rutgers.
Jones was at Duke for the 2001-2002 (Jr) and 2002-2003 (sr) seasons.
Those are the only 2 years that Jones played at Duke
http://www.goduke.com/ViewArticle.dbml?ATCLID=135176

Clemson played Duke twice in those years. Home and Home

In 2001 Duke beat Clemson at Cameron Jan 7th, Duke 115 Clemson 74

In 2001 Duke beat Clemson at Littlejohn
Feb 7th Duke 81 Clemson 64 no OT, no comeback, no nothing,
Jones was there but was on the bench redshirting after transferring from Rutgers. Hard to foul in street clothes.

In 2001- 2002
Duke beat Clemson 96-80 at Cameron
Duke beat Clemson 98-88 at Littlejohn, no OT and in fact Duke lead all the way down the stretch and never trailed in the 2nd half. There was no foul or tug on Supermans caps or anything.
Jones was a Junior. Clemson stayed close only trailing 77-76 with but went 6 minutes without scoring, Duke lead 87-78 with 3:31 and cruised to a 10 point win.
https://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=SFOYbPikdlgC&dat=20020203&printsec=frontpage&hl=en

In 2002-2003
Duke beat Clemson 89-71 at Littlejohn. Again no tug, no OT, no victory stolen from Clemson, never happened
Duke beat Clemson 65-55 at Cameron

Jones graduated.
2 trips to Littlejohn, both were double digit wins, neither was OT, neither had an incident anywhere close to what the OP claimed.

Just another Tigernet Fairy Tale.

Looking at 3/4/92 reg. season 98-97 loss @Clemson

Mar 27, 2016, 9:59 PM [ in reply to Re: Respect your research & saw what I saw. Will do homework*** ]

Also 3/7/98 ACC 66-64 tourney loss on ESPN. Not OT and not Dohntay Jones (could easily have been Roshawn McLeod, another Duke transfer from St John's) or Chris Carrawell. These were both very strong Duke teams so the losses were crushing. And the play(s) were identical to what I described.

So anyway, real games. Real results. Games Tigers had won. Will look for ESPN video.

Maybe the game was at the YMCA
And maybe it was the Under 12 All Stars from the Iva Starr vs. Pelzer.
And maybe it was not basketball but rather kickball.
and maybe it was just a figment of the imagination.

Check out Jan. 24, 1987 #10 Clemson 105-103 loss to #12 Duke. I remeber Elden Capbell being pulled down so that should make sense. Also check out 3/4/92 98-97 loss to Duke @ Clemson. Possibly 1984 67-65 loss at Clemson. And Hopefully some Raycom clips remains. I've seen hundreds of Clemson games, traveled to 30-plus years of live NCAA tournaments, and three final fours. Hard to keep up with them all, but I still appreciate your respectful tone.

Mar 28, 2016, 9:28 AM

what you think.

I promise if the shoe was on the other foot, you wouldn't have one single problem if that was a "staple Clemson play." Haters gonna hate. Coach K has shown quite a bit of respect to the Clemson program and it's fans over the years. People just get on here and b!tch about him because he wins, a lot. And the ones that kill me the most are, Oh his foul language, he's got such an awful mouth....

Never heard anybody complain about Danny Ford's mouth on here. Danny could string some together that would be enough to make a sailor blush.

Re: The False Public Persona of Coack K

Mar 28, 2016, 10:15 AM

Couldn't have said it better. Sometimes folks just aren't what they appear to be. Really sad because it truly tarnishes his image and there is no need for it. Just sad when you think about it.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Coach K does not have a false persona. You should not say that!

Mar 28, 2016, 10:41 AM

To me he presents himself as a weird, weasel-looking character. It seems pretty obvious he enjoys the company of other guys, specifically big young white boys. Hope that's not wrong to say, maybe that's just the Coach but he does not appear to be hiding much. He can coach those young white boy's better than anyone out there though.
