Clowney's 300 is a SRT-8 model
Dec 10, 2013, 10:02 PM

Most expensive model there is. It looks like s 2005-2010 model from the trunk styling, so not brand-new, but those things are still really expensive used. ($16k-$20k for early models with low miles)
How does a poor kid afford this?
Time for the NCAA investigation?

No way it was that cheap

Just did a nationwide search on two different sites, the cheapest used SRT8 of any year was $14k.
If you can find me a $7300 SRT8, I'll buy it on the spot.
In any event, that's still a pricey car for a poor college student.

He's 5 months from the NFL Draft. He or his parents would have no problem getting a loan. Call it a violation or whatever but Clowney will have millions of dollars in a few short months and he can pay back a whole $20,000 loan with one check.

If it's only the $7,300 estimated before then that isn't too bad. Being a college student that is still a lot of money, my car isn't even worth that much, but who knows?

new Lincoln Navigator back when they were new and cool in '98. It happens, will happen, and won't ever stop happening. There are ways around it I guess. Not as bad as the 80's but they can always find a good deal.

My parents got me a new truck (around $30ish grand) when I graduated high school and compared to a lot of students cars at Clemson it's just average. Lots if college kids have new Rang Rovers, BMWs, Mercedes and whatever.

Once upon a time...
Dec 10, 2013, 11:14 PM
|
|
I had some college kids (that just happened to play football) over for thanksgiving dinner. I graduated high school with one of the kids mom, and they didn't have anywhere else to go (the cafeteria was closed on thanksgiving).
I know my buddy didn't have a car, but they rolled up in a range rover. I didn't ask any questions.
(FWIW, the kid transferred to another school after his freshman year).

I mean nobody truly knows these kids' situations. We can pretend like we do but we don't. I have friends from high school who aren't collegiate athletes and were driving brand new cars and their parents had next to no money. I'm sure they were swamped by their car payment but obviously they thought it was worth it. We would never know of Boyd, Clowney, or any other guy had some kind of trust fund or savings account set up. We all jump to conclusions an say "they're paying players!" when in reality that's probably not the case.

I'm sure that some car salesman will give any of these future NFL stars a back loaded loan that they get to pay back with hefty interest once they get their first NFL paychecks.
That goes for almost any school, anywhere.

If I was a car dealer, I'd make that sale. He was the #1 recruit, and will get a hefty payday in three years. If he kicks me out $20 a month, or even nada, with a balloon payment contract, he's still going to pay it off more quickly than most of my other customers, and it'll all go to me. No bank loan. I'm surprised someone didn't get him in a newer model. I would've.

To be fair, when you're projected to be a high 1st round draft pick there is no shortage of friends willing to give you money. Think of it as an investment.
