If it's cloudy, will that make the stadium louder? Does it

Oct 18, 2013, 2:04 PM

make a significant difference? Sound certainly seems to carry more when there is a fog or evening mist...Any thoughts?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Velocity of sound is greater in denser materials,

Oct 18, 2013, 2:09 PM

That's why noise seems to carry further on foggy days.

As long as rain doesn't actually mask sound, denser air should make for a louder Valley.

From what I recall, a more dense medium allows for a higher sound velocity, but it reduces the distance that the sound is heard (ie. the volume drop off is quicker).

Although I'm not an acoustics engineer so we need expert help on this.

Correct as well, however with 85,000+ sitting almost

directly on top of the field the sound will not have room to dissapate until it bursts Jameis' ear drums. Certainly not before it leaves DV I wouldn't believe.

Indeed it is. I don't think we'll need much help making it

loud in DV tomorrow, but every little bit will help. I can promise you that I won't be able to talk until Thursday. Just curious Rev., we're you an ME or some other engineering Major?

No, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night...

...actually, it's just a God-given ability to remember worthless information. I can't remember where the heck I'm supposed to be tomorrow morning, but I can tell you who sang back to Hoyt Axton on "Bony Fingers." (FWIW, Renee Armand and the Coyote Sisters.)

Rain chance all but gone in the hourly forecast Rev. If we see anything at all it will drop between 12p - 3p

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yep! Glad to see it! Wind will be dying as well...

Oct 18, 2013, 3:02 PM

Lighter wind and rising humidity = good sound retention.

Anybody know a good sound engineer?

The hourly forecast calls for it to be in the mid 60's at kick, mostly cloudy and 80% humidity. By 11p it will be down to the mid 50's with the same clouds and humidity.

Will this make us louder?
