According to my rating system
1. UVA over #45 Penn St. 2. Maryland over #70 Temple 3. Clemson over #76 Ball St.
The ACC is 0-9 in OOC games against my Top 40.
Here are the Top 40 OOC records by other conferences:
Big 12: 2-2 Big 10: 2-9 Big East: 2-2 Pac-12: 2-4 SEC: 4-4 MAC: 1-11 MWC: 0-9 Sun Belt: 0-10 C-USA: 0-20 WAC: 0-7

1. Clemson is ranked higher, at #30.
2. Just because a team is ranked higher doesn't mean I think they would win, anyway.

Which is
normalized win percentage + normalized point differential + 0.5*normalized opponents' win percentage + 0.5*normalized opponents' point differential + 0.25*normalized opponents' opponents' win percentage + 0.25*normalized opponents' opponents' point differential
All against FBS teams, only.

They will be no worse than 8-4 this year. But when the SEC's best win is over Michigan, really shouldn't be bashing other conferences record vs OOC. At least the ACC will play tough teams out of conference

What does point differential have to do with anything? Ohio st won a national title while barely beating teams. I don't buy into how bad you beat someone. Also your system is highly flawed when you have TT #3 after getting drilled by OU, so how can they be ahead of OU?

1. I disagree with point differential being meaningless. Winning games by 35 points usually means you're better than if you win by 3 points. Pure math types would probably say that point differential should be the only thing used, but I compromise, 50/50.
2. Texas Tech is higher than Oklahoma because they have a slightly better record, a better point differential, and a slightly tougher schedule so far.

Who has TT beat besides WV? Also when TT gets beat that badly to OU, no way you can put them ahead of OU when both have one loss.

Also why is Bama #1? They have beat nor played anyone
Oct 19, 2012, 1:45 PM

K state won at Norman and have much tougher schedule. ND has beaten much better teams than Bama too. If you're going by that logic, then Bama has no right being #1, they have played no one.

They have a rating of 3.900, as opposed to 3.513 for Oklahoma.
Texas Tech has beaten Iowa St., who is ranked higher in my ratings than Texas. Texas Tech destroyed WVU, who is also higher than Texas.
I agree with you that Oklahoma is a better team. But I don't alter the math to agree with my opinions.

Well, let's be honest.

Alabama wouldn't be #1 if they had only played "cupcakes" so far. Their SOS is 44th, which isn't that bad.
Louisiana Tech has an excellent point differential, but are only ranked 19th because their SOS is 108th.

Overall, Alabama's opponents are

|
|
15-13 with a 15.67 avg. point differential. (not including their game against Bama)
La Tech's opponents are 11-19 with a -24.5 avg. point differential. (not including their game against LaTech)
So...the numbers say Alabama's schedule has been much tougher.

I don't really think in terms of "awarding" and "punishing".

But, OK. I think this is the best I can do, as an amateur. I certainly don't claim that my system is "good". I like discussing it.

you beat, margin of Victory means little as you could beat Furman by 70 and get rewarded while K state beats OU by a TD and gets punished.

In any way in my rating system. As far as my formula goes, those games never happened. I don't have a component for home/road...I haven't thought of a good way to do that.

that stink worse than So Conference teams? Beating Ball st by 100 isn't that great and shouldn't get more points than winning over OU or a major conference team by less points

I don't know what it is. I chose 50/50.
And I don't KNOW that Alabama winning by 40 over Florida Atlantic got them more "points" than KSU beating Oklahoma. My ratings don't deal in awarding "points". It's overall averages. Bama's avg. point differential in FBS games is 33.0. Kansas State's is 20.8. Those are the numbers that are used as the point differential component (normalized to a Z-score, of course).

At least according to this rating system. ACC and Big Ten had opportunities, but lost just about all of them.

I think the idea that the ACC is down this year has been

met with mostly agreement on this message board.
I can't believe our Ball State win is more impressive than our Auburn win. Yikes, Auburn. What happened to you?
ACC teams need to take care of business OOC and they just haven't. We have another round of opportunities at the end of the season. South Carolina vs Clemson and Florda vs. FSU will both be big-time match-ups between highly ranked SEC and ACC opponents. Georgia vs GT will also be a good showcase. Then of course there are the bowl games. I'm not overly-optimistic that the ACC bowl teams will be strong enough to make any statements but eventually that has to start happening.

So Auburn is 84th and lost by 2 points to LSU, and SUC is 8th and lost by 2 points to LSU????? I guess LSU is NOT the benchmark team that they used to be.
Okie-dokie.

I dont know why everybody bi..hes so much about the ACC. It is actually the perfect conference to win the national title out of. It is strong enough to get you into the national title game if you have an undefeated season, but it is not so tough that you will get destroyed in conference play. Thats how it should work anyway but we cant manage to go undefeated in the ACC. I think when we run the table and get left out of a national title game we would then have something to bit.h about. Until then, pointless.
