Clemson architectural school in Charleston still a hot topic

The new architectural school located corner of Meeting and George streets still is a very hot topic. First of all why hire a firm from the state of Washington to design it? Plenty of very well qualified Clemson grads or even Charleston Firms to design this building. This is a slap in the face to all Clemson Alums. Then there is the design itself. It looks like something out of Star Wars. It has no place in Charleston. It would be ridiculed in most any city. In fact there is a pretty strong movement by Charleston residents to ask the State of SC to intervene since this is a state building proposed. Two powerful local state politicians (one who lives a block away from the proposed building) have said they will look to see if they can stop the new building in its current design. Bottom line is it's an ugly building. I have attached pics of the proposed building.

Can't say I'm a fan. It is very European looking. Sometimes that's good and sometimes not so good.

I agree that Clemson people should have designed it. However, one must remember that there are some who won't accept it, no matter what it looks like, because it is a Clemson building. A lot of C of C and coot people down there. The newspaper is Coot Central.

I like it as well.

It looks fine to me. Architects love curves and lines.***

are you sure the grad students at the college would not prefer brick and a gabled roof? ;)

We should let Lindsey Graham design it. He knows everything***

Just needs an orange front door. That will dress it up

To figure out why Clemson needs an architecture school in Charleston.

Hasn't it been approved by the Chas. Board of Review???

I'm far,far from being an expert on this issue, but from what I've read and been told, most of the folks raising a ruckus about it are largely the nimbys* fussing about cruise ships docking in Charleston.

And it does seem that much of the opposition stems from it being a Clemson building. I guess its just not as classy as the chicken t-shirt store on King St.

No problem with design. Everything in Chucktown doesn't have to look like Tara....

The building was actually designed between a firm in Portland, Oregon...and ee fava, a local firm located in Charleston. Certainly not 'traditional' for a historical city...but I do like the play with water/waves for a city where the port has had so much historical significance.

Yeah, why not let Harvey Gantt's firm and my firm to do MEP? :)

I suppose this is one of those topics that some will descry

as being art for art's sake.

Others will believe it to give the city a heavy dose of 21st Century oomph, while a few will question why Charleston needs it in the first place.

I tend to favor form and function flowing smoothly, blending in with the flair of the area, rather than a structure sticking out like a sore thumb. Whether or not the proposed building is pleasing to the eye, adding to the city's charm, will be debated until its demise.
