Clemson QB Room January 2018

Sep 30, 2020, 12:27 PM

There was a brief moment in January 2018 after Lawrence enrolled and before Zerrick Cooper opted to transfer, that the Clemson QB Room featured 5 different QBs who were D-I starters at 5 different schools (4 of them at P5 Schools)

- Lawrence: Clemson
- Bryant: Clemson, Mizzou
- Hunter Johnson: Northwestern
- Zerrick Cooper: Jacksonville St
- Chase Brice: Duke

Granted, not all of them were world beaters at their respective schools, but that's gotta be a record, right? Paging Tim Bourret!

Anyone think of another QB Roster that deep?

2008 Florida had Tebow, Cam Newton, and John Brantley - Newton obviously won the Heisman at Auburn and Brantley eventually started at UF.

2011 Florida had Brantley, Jeff Driskel (LA Tech), and Jacoby Brissett (NC St).

2008 USC had Mark Sanchez and Mitch Mustain (Mustain started at Arkansas before transferring).

UGA this year technically had/has: JT Daniels (USC), Jamie Newman (Wake), D'wan Mathis all having started now.

2012 UF comes the closest - Tyler Murphy (BC), Driskel, Brissett, Skyler Mornhinweg (transferred to Columbia University and started).

Any other schools ever come close?

Go back a few decades and it becomes staggering.... teams could just hoard talent and even the backups would be stars in the NFL... let alone starters at other schools.

I think early 80s Miami was the last great one to be stocked at QB. Jim Kelly, Kolsar, Testaverde, ... and Richt. Not sure if ALL overlapped, but I know that Kolsar was Kelly's backup and so was Testaverde and Richt to Kolsar.

question is, at different schools.

I think the prevalence of transfers makes this a completely recent phenomenon.

JT Barrett (OSU)
Dwayne Haskins (OSU)
Tate Martell (Miami*)
Joe Burrow (LSU)

The other guy was Kory Curtis whom I've never heard of.

*Didn't actually start

Good call--did "My dude" Tathan ever start a game at Maimi?

Sep 30, 2020, 12:39 PM

I seem to recall him never being named starter and then moving to WR?

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yeah i don't think he actually started

They moved him to WR at one point for sure.

Counting Tate Martell as a talented addition to a QB room is like counting Tucker Israel at Clemson.

Just because some thought you would be good, does not mean you added to the room.

Bet the Redskins is loving some Haskins***

The 2015 Ohio St team had Cardale Jones, JT Barrett, Joe Burrow, and newly converted WR Braxton Miller.

If you include Miller who led his team to an Orange Bowl appearance at QB, that is a pretty impressive college QB room.

Good call. I forgot Burrow was there that year.***

Yeah in terms of succession of talent that's certainly

Sep 30, 2020, 12:48 PM [ in reply to Re: Clemson QB Room January 2018 ]

a better roster but I'm specifically talking about starters at different schools.

Well for 2018, you might as well add Hunter Renfrow to that list. 50% completion rate...

Michigan in the mid 1990s had:

1994 - Todd Collins, Scott Dreisbach, and Brian Griese

1995-97 Dreisbach, Griese, and Tom Brady

1998: Dreisbach, Brady, and Drew Henson

Dreisbach started some in college and hung around the NFL for some years. Henson is what could have been perhaps. Collins started some, but was a long time NFL backup. Everyone knows Griese and Brady.

Don't forget about Justin Fields at UGA as well.***
