When was the last time Clemson has had a legit backup QB?

May 8, 2017, 7:40 PM

Im talking about a backup that could come in & see little to no dropoff from the starter? Imo, its been close to 7 seasons when Kyle Parker was the starter and Willy Korn was our backup. Boyd was the backup to Parker in 2010 and did do some things well when he was asked to play but there was a reason they kept Parker the starter even after battling injuries all season. Cole Stoudt played ok as a backup to Boyd but we all know he was a big drop off from Boyd. Schuessler was the backup to Watson for 2 years and he had a good arm but there's no way he would of got us in the national championship game if Watson were to get injured. What im trying to say is that we have been very lucky the last 7 or 8 years that our starting QB has been able to stay healthy during the whole season with the exception of 2014 bc i definitely don't believe we would have 6 consecutive 10 win seasons if would of had rely on the 2nd string qb uring that time span. I think we finally are in the situation now to have a little more confidence in our backup QBs for the next few years to not see much of dropoff if the starter goes down with Bryant, Johnson, Cooper, Tucker, Brice and Trevor Lawrence when he comes in next year.

Re: When was the last time Clemson has had a legit backup QB?

May 8, 2017, 8:04 PM

We will be fine at QB next year. Are they as good as Watson, no.
But questions are who will step up and win the job.
Talent-wise, we will be fine; but these are different types of QBs. We will see 2+ used many games to take advantages their different skills. We will keep defenses on their heels, because once they are prepared to stop what we are doing; we will come out and take advantage of the adjustments that opponents make.
The nice part of this is we are much better than the general assumption that Clemson will have a drop off. We are only reloading, offensively and defensively.
Opponents are not prepared for what we will bring on both sides of the ball.
I love making others eat their words, as we will do in years to come.

Im not worried about this year, i actually said in my post that this year is the first year we don't have to worry about our starter getting injured because we finally have quality depth at the qb position which is something we haven't had the last 7-8 years

And just maybe one of the 2 QB's will get their game to moving right along, then normalcy will be back!!!

Re: Deshaun Watson likely would have backed up Chad Kelly

May 9, 2017, 8:23 PM

We sure could of used Chad Kelly in the 2014 season when Watson was out for a few games and we had to rely on a injured Cole Stoudt to win games. It would of been a very interesting qb battle in 2014 if Kelly wasn't dismissed from the team that year before fall practice. Imo, i think Kelly would have started that year but would of been replaced by Watson after the 3rd or 4th game. Kelly would have transferred after the 2014 season anyways but if he was on the team i think we would of had a good chance to make it to the playoffs that year with the defense we had. Just my opinion

Can't remember exactly if Simmons and/or Whitehurst were backups for Woody but they were legit backups as some point. I think simmons to Woody and whitehurst to Simmons.

May 8, 2017, 9:00 PM

Willy Simmons stepped in when Woody went down at UNC. If my memory serves me, we were down two scores and Simmons brought us back to win, with the help of some amazing catches by Rod Gardner. Maybe the only time I remember a backup coming in and leading a comeback for us. I was at that game and remember the Tarheel fans eating crow after we came back to win.

Correct. Watson was the best backup QB in Clemson history those first few games of 2014.

U are correct but i don't really count Watson as a backup that season. He started after the 3rd game. My post was simply about when was thev last timd we went through whole season without being stressed over our starting going down.

2014, twice.

First when Watson backed up Stoudt.

Then when Stoudt backed up Watson and crushed the Sooners.

Re: When was the last time Clemson has had a legit backup QB?

May 9, 2017, 8:51 PM

You must not remember the 2014 season very well. Cole Stoudt played well in the first half against uga and the bowl game, thats it. When Watson went out early in the Louisville game we struggled to beat them, wake, cuse, and boston college when Stoudt was at QB. And do u not remember when Watson went out again in the GT game and Stoudt throwing 2 pick six's? Plus we had to have Watson play on a torn ACL to beat the coots. In fairness to Stoudt, he was playing injured most of that year and i appreciate him playing through it but he wasn't a good backup QB to Watson. We were very fortunate to have the defense we had in 2014 because we could have easily went 7-5 or 8-4 without those studs on defense

May 8, 2017, 9:38 PM

Stoudt needed. Yep, all Stoudt needed was a good QB coach!

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You can't just make that assumption based on 1 game

May 9, 2017, 1:06 PM

Streeter had been QB coach for 1 week and Scelliott had been co-OCs for a little under 4 weeks. That's not enough time to make a serious impact on a QB.

Stoudt had a nice game against a Big XII defense. Let's not read much more into than that. It was one nice game... certainly not enough evidence to prove he was suddenly going to be a good QB. There's nearly an entire regular season worth of evidence to suggest otherwise.

Yeah, I haven't read through the entire thread, but I would hope that a few have mentioned Schuessler. He was money every time he entered the game. I remember when Watson went out with the shoulder injury, I was worried, but Nick came in firing BBs. He'll stick in the league, I think.
