Chad Morris on hiring a DC

Dec 7, 2017, 1:52 PM

To his team and then Arkansas media: “I’m going to hire the best defensive coordinator in the country”.

First question in press conference: You said you’d be hiring the best DC in the nation, many believe that means Brent Venables. What’s your take on that?

CM *smiles* Dabo would not be too happy with me. But without saying names, I have a short list of names.

John Chavis comes to mind for me of course if not BV.

If BV says no, he should ask Saban

While he's thinking up plans that will never happen.

BV would never leave Oklahoma for Clemson

-said by many in 2012

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think he would leave personally

Dec 7, 2017, 2:12 PM

I never really see him and Dabo buddy buddy like him and the Chad.
But the only reason I think he stays is his sons.

Stoops brought back his brother to again

Dec 7, 2017, 2:14 PM [ in reply to BV would never leave Oklahoma for Clemson ]

make them Co DC's. BV called Dabo. Some people forget that. BV made the first move to be at Clemson .

Re: Stoops brought back his brother to again

Dec 7, 2017, 2:24 PM

So how did BV know we were interested in him as DC?

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Steele was fired, so an opening was there.

Dec 7, 2017, 2:34 PM

The jest of my statement, is BV made the move to work with DS. Remember ,it was a big deal for him to leave Oklahoma. Him and the Stoops Boys are like Brothers. It'd be just as big of a deal for him to leave Clemson. Next move he makes, is up,not sideways. Arkansas DC is actually a step down.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Steele was fired, so an opening was there.

Dec 7, 2017, 2:45 PM

I know, I was just messing with you. I remember the stories about how loyal he is and how it tore him up and it was his wife that pushed him to make the move.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Most outsiders would have called OU to Clemson

Dec 7, 2017, 3:39 PM [ in reply to Steele was fired, so an opening was there. ]

a large step down at that point, regardless of the co-DC tag.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Nobody said that. He was being pushed out at OU. I'd expect

Dec 7, 2017, 4:45 PM [ in reply to BV would never leave Oklahoma for Clemson ]

you to atleast have some knowledge of the situation before commenting but you obviously know nothing about Brent Venables leaving OU and being hired here. You just know he left Oklahoma to come here and you assumed a lot of people didn't expect him to leave since it's often the case with coaches leaving schools like that.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Based on BVs past comments

Dec 7, 2017, 6:16 PM [ in reply to BV would never leave Oklahoma for Clemson ]

It would seem odd to go to Arkansas. What does he really stand to gain by going there? I’d get it if he wasn’t comfortable at Clemson or needs a change but t it’d be odd.

I know he is buds with Morris but BV could be a head coach and is a better coordinator than Morris was....debatable but by a slim margin.

I don’t think they can recruit the same talent, but I could be wrong.
We’ll see and be fine either way but it sure would be in direct conflict with BV prior comments.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Never happen

Dec 7, 2017, 1:56 PM

They didn't turn down Brent for the HC job,he turned them down. He didn't want to go there as the head man, he's not going there as the DC.

Anyone still bringing it up still, has a problem between the ears ,or just a Coot Dreaming.

BV told KJ last night where he'd be.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Had a coot friend tell me yesterday it's a possibility.

Dec 7, 2017, 2:00 PM

He was giddy just thinking Clemson may lose him. I just laughed and told him it wouldn't happen.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

For once they know the same thing we know,

Dec 7, 2017, 2:04 PM

if he doesn't leave this year,he won't leave both of his sons finish college.

We already know he's not leaving, they are still hoping/dreaming.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Chad Morris on hiring a DC

Dec 7, 2017, 1:59 PM

Of course Chad is going to talk up his DC. If Venables was leaving to be his DC he would have already been hired and not on the road with Dabo and Bates recruiting for us.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Brad Brownell: more losses than any other coach in school history.

Not trolling just going by friends I have who went to Arkansas. I don’t think he’s going to leave it’d be stupid to make a lateral move to a rebuilding team, but apparently they had 7 mil ready for Malzahn and now they can give Morris 4.5 and Venables 2.5.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He’s already getting 1.7 m here and due for a raise

Dec 7, 2017, 2:15 PM

I think this allows him to get a nice raise. I don’t foresee him leaving. I live in Arkansas and know a lot of Arkansas grads and people that know people etc and they don’t know ####. If he was leaving it would be for head coach not dc

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: keep trying

Dec 7, 2017, 2:30 PM [ in reply to Re: keep trying ]

Why would they give Morris $4.5M/year when he signed a contract for $3.5M/year?

Plus, there is no way that right now they would pay him $2.5M to be a coordinator when there are only 4 coordinators in the nation (offense and defense) that make $1.5M+, with BV coming in at second at $1.7M (highest is $1.8M).

He may hire the best "available" DC in the country.

Dec 7, 2017, 2:09 PM

Not many established DCs are going to be "available" for a lateral move into a situation where the head coach was at least 2nd choice when he himself was hired.

Re: Chad Morris on hiring a DC

Dec 7, 2017, 2:20 PM

Good grief, Brent Venables is not going anywhere and why would he? Chad said as much in the Q&A from his press conference today:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TpifMNzTisA

If Chad Morris is smart he would certainly talk to his friend BV - not with a job offer but to get BV's advice/recommendation for a DC at Arkansas. To think Venables is going to leave Clemson, especially for another DC job at a team that is rebuilding when he is the 2nd highest paid assistant in all of college football at a program that is reloading every year with his son coming to play for him next Summer is crazy.
