I don't think you can even compare them really

Different offense, different plays, different stamina, different rules, different gear, different speed, different diet, different coaching. The list is endless.
Having watched both teams play, I can say that the 1981 NC team would have been lucky to have escaped playing today's team and not lose worse than Bama. I'd predict an absolute blowout. Give Danny Ford a VHS tape of every play we've run from every game this year, give him a month to prepare, then go out and play. The biggest problem playing them today, or back then, would be the OL blocking rules. Those have changed A LOT. Let them use our rules, or us their rules. Doesn't matter.
Perry and MAYBE Kinard would the only two I can see keeping from that team at any position really. Oh, I'd take both the 1981 kickers.

Perry truly was a unique specimen for that era.

Of course, it wasn't but a few years further down the road that you started to see more players like that emerge, but in 1981...Perry was an absolute freak of nature. Far more than someone like Clowney was when he was a freshman.

Crazy freak athlete. I think most people around my age 40-ish don’t understand just how great of a true athlete he was

Yep. Perry was a freak at the time. But about average now

for a top 25 D1 D lineman. And back in 1981 I'm sure the same conversation went on about some of the older Clemson teams under Frank Howard. Those 1981 boys were monsters compared to the teams Howard fielded. IN fact, I'd argue our team now is actually better than many NFL teams in 1981.

I don't doubt that the 2018 Tigers would be better than some

1981 NFL teams. In 1980, I was at a Falcons game and one of the players was sitting on the bench smoking a cigarette while the game was going on. Not a kicker either...the guy was a lineman.

That's why it's always hard trying to call a team the GOAT

I hear what you're saying. I tried to base this on athletic ability and football knowledge rather than rule changes, equipment, diets etc., but fair enough.

Really, there are only two, based solely on athletic ability

And the kickers....can't forget them. They were awesome. That's one area where things have not changed much.

DW4 should have won 2. But didn’t.

I still have them both recorded. Maybe I’ll go back and watch in my spare time. DW4 was a bit prone to an INT or two. That’s the only reason I could give the edge to TL16. But, DW4 was/is a freaking winner... through and through. I’m anxious to see what we have in store the next couple years, but a drop off from this year wouldn’t surprise me. I’m sure it’ll still be better than 99% of the power five, but I’m not sure he can perform quite up to the standard he set this year. It was impeccable. I’d think a lot more TDs, bust also maybe a good bit more INTs. Will have to wait and see.

Freshman years are all we have to use as a measure.

Right now there's no comparison in freshman years. It's not equal to compare a Jr and a Freshman either.
