Week 14 Prodigal Football Ratings
Dec 3, 2018, 2:14 PM
|
|
The biggest question here was whether Alabama would pass Clemson by beating a superior opponent in their championship game. Despite Clemson doing a better job in scoring margin, Alabama did just barely squeeze into the #1 spot, but it is very close.
As I predicted, Georgia did not fall out of the top four in my ratings. There are a couple of large gaps: between #2 and #3, and between #4 and #5. Ohio St. couldn't get higher than #8 due to their relatively weak schedule, and after them is the other major dropoff to #9.

The biggest problem I have with your poll this week is the

fact that Louisville is rated MUCH too high. There are plenty of other things, of course, but that's the biggest problem I have.

In all seriousness, when your schedule is that strong

it's hard to drop to the very bottom, no matter how much you lose.
They are 124th out of 130 teams in scoring-margin-only rating. So that should tell us something. They just got killed all year.

In actual straight-up scoring margin, they finished 129th

Only UConn, who literally gave up more points than any team ever has, was worse.

I still marvel at how far and how fast they fell.

They can't possibly be that untalented...that team just flat gave up early.

What's amazing is how similar Clemson and Alabama

are by these numbers. Schedule strength pretty much exactly the same, both undefeated, Alabama just a few points better in scoring margin. Alabama played more Top-20-type teams, but Clemson's schedule was deeper overall, with more Top-40 wins and fewer Bottom-40 wins.

Clemson allowed a point per game less, Bama scored a couple points per game more.

I always post the full rating after the last game, Army/Navy

Which includes the actual rating number. I don't normally include because it's really just a number...doesn't mean anything tangible.

It would just be interesting to see how close some teams are according to your algorithm.
