The supposed Madden cover jinx, which brings bad luck to the NFL player who appears on the cover of the popular video game, has affected to some degree every cover subject since 1999. The game title is always a year ahead, with Madden 2000 appearing during the 1999 season, and so on.

Madden 2000: Barry Sanders

Sanders retired from the Detroit Lions before training camp, in July 1999, and that might have been the only thing that could have kept him from breaking the then-NFL record for most career rushing yards held by Walter Payton. He went years without explaining his abrupt exit from the game but later blamed it on the Detroit Lions’ culture of losing. Dorsey Levens appeared on the PAL version of the 2000 game, and the Green Bay Packers, for whom Levens was playing at the time, failed to make the playoffs, and Levens was eventually released.

Madden 2001: Eddie George

George led the Tennessee Titans to the Divisional round of the playoffs after the 2000 season, but he bobbled a pass from Steve McNair in the fourth quarter of that game and it was returned for a touchdown by Ray Lewis, sealing the loss. After that season, he never averaged more than 3.4 yards per carry for a season again.

Madden 2002: Daunte Culpepper

Culpepper struggled in 2001, throwing 14 TDs and 13 interceptions as the Vikings went 5-11, then threw 23 interceptions and broke the NFL record for fumbles in a season in 2002 as the Vikings went 6-10. He bounced back in 2004 but then suffered injuries to both knees, in 2005 and 2006.

Madden 2003: Marshall Faulk

Faulk, the centerpiece of the “Greatest Show on Turf,” signed a $43.95 million contract in 2002, with a $10.7 million signing bonus – and promptly never rushed for 1,000 yards again in his career. Knee injuries slowed him in 2002 and 2003, and he retired after a knee surgery in 2005.

Madden 2004: Michael Vick

Vick suffered a broken leg in a preseason game against the Baltimore Ravens, and played in only the final five games, passing for 585 yards, as the Falcons went 5-11. Then there was that whole dog-fighting and prison thing.

Madden 2005: Ray Lewis

Lewis played the first 15 games before suffering a wrist injury and missing the finale. It was his first season without an interception, but he has had a Hall of Fame career otherwise with the Baltimore Ravens and is still in the league.

Madden 2006: Donovan McNabb

McNabb went to the Super Bowl after 2004 season, but after appearing on the cover he suffered a sports hernia in Game 1 of 2005, and in his ninth game tore the ACL in his right knee against the Tennessee Titans. Another injury limited him to 10 games in 2006, but he passed for more than 3,000 yards in each of the three following seasons.

Madden 2007: Shaun Alexander

Alexander, the NFL’s reigning MVP after an 1,800-yard rushing season for the Seahawks in 2005, suffered a foot injury that cost him six games in 2006. He never rushed for 1,000 yards again in his NFL career.

Madden 2008: Vince Young

His performance was similar in the 2006 season, before he appeared on the cover, and in 2007, but since then his career has been a

train wreck – injuries in 2008 and 2010, and his departure from the Titans before the 2011 season.

Madden 2009: Brett Favre

Pictured as a Packer on the cover because he had retired after 2007, he un-retired and was traded to the Jets for 2008. He didn’t play up to his former standards and was accused of sexual harassment by a team employee off the field. He bounced back to have a good 2009 season with the Vikings.

Madden 2010: Larry Fitzgerald and Troy Polamalu

Arizona’s Fitzgerald bucked the trend, making the Pro Bowl after the 2009 season, in which he had 97 receptions for 1,092 yards, and 13 touchdowns. Polamalu, a Pittsburgh defensive back, injured his knee in the season opener and missed four games. Later in 2009, he injured his knee again.

Madden 2011: Drew Brees

Brees doubled his interception total from the Super Bowl championship season of 2009, and after the 2012 season the Saints lost in the first round of the playoffs to Seattle, which entered the playoffs with a losing record.

Madden 2012: Peyton Hillis

Hillis’ rushing total dropped from 1,177 yards in 2010 to 587 yards in 2011 after his appearance on the cover. He missed games with a hamstring injury and strep throat.

Calvin Johnson broke the single season receiving yard record. Curse?

Yeah, I think breaking Jerry Rice's long-standing record nullifies said "curse"

Also after appearing on the cover most of those guys didn't

have their "pre-cover" years stats ever again.

Ray Lewis was on the cover in 05 and just won a Super Bowl.
