Serious question about Clowney

Feb 26, 2013, 4:20 PM

why has ESPN and SI and others started to hype him so much? I understand he is good but they don't ordinarily do this. Is it because his name is kinda unique? If his name was Rick Smith would he be getting this hype. It sounds silly but I honestly dont think so.

the other defensive "prodigy"

BC he is the best defensive player in the country and would be the #1 pick in this years draft.

Feb 26, 2013, 4:30 PM

that clowney is the best defensive player in the nation and would be the first pick in this years draft if he was allowed to come out.

Every year esecpn tries to hype a defensive player because they pretty much never win the award. the last one, charles woodson played some wr and also was a kick returner.

It will be an honor to have Clowney there to watch Tajh get his Heisman in person :)

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

add to that, tajh enjoys a cfa bowl - type of game vs.usuc

Feb 26, 2013, 6:57 PM

to end the winless streak, and in the process, puts clemson in the mnc game, and ensures that clowney is only in nyc as a guest of the ny city touchdown club, the same as the other invitees without a chance to win!

Not entirely true, I'm sure that everytime they flip the burger or pump a gallon of unleaded they silently give USuCks the credit for what they have become.

prospect in a long time

Clowney WON by himself at least 4 games for SCar.

I hate SCar, but Clowney is that good.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You're right, without him they don't win 11 games. With him

uh, no

Feb 26, 2013, 5:28 PM

Bowers was a great college football player

but right now Clowney is pretty unique with his size and talent after 2 years of college football.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Don't worry about elcid, Tymick....

Feb 26, 2013, 8:48 PM

He's merely doing his best to pretend he has interest in Clemson football.

No, Daquan was as highly recruited and just as

Incorrect

Mar 8, 2013, 8:51 AM

I never saw draft projections saying Bowers would be the clear number 1 pick when he was playing his sophomore year.

Agree- but there is a difference too

Mar 11, 2013, 9:54 PM

Clowney was being talked as a 1st round pick this year- if he went out - and this is his 2nd year of college football.

Bowers was a great player- but he wasn't being talked about as a clear #1 pick had he left college as a sophomore. It wasn't even an issue - no one was talking about that.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Not talking about his recruitment - was clearly talking

his NFL status.

Clowney has been talked about as the 1 pick this year- as a sophomore- had he been able to come out.

That was never the case with Bowers. Sorry, but it simply wasn't - and that's very clear despite your bias against him.

Re: He's a freak of an athlete and arguably the best DE.....

Definitely agree...without the clown scar has losses to us,Tenn,Michigan, and probably Vandy. When he leaves scar goes back to winning 608 games/year.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

they got bored of hyping MAnzel.. This is very common

for ESPN.. In fact,it is the norm.

Geville Tiger on Clemson football , "Dabo's only problem is he has to deal with turd fans questioning every move he makes.”

Re: Serious question about Clowney

Feb 26, 2013, 5:25 PM

Because he is the best defensive player in the country and the future #1 pick in next years draft. As much as I hate Carolina Clowney's talent is undeniable and If only he would have put on a Tiger hat on NSD two years ago instead of the chicken hat I think we have an undefeated regular season last year and are playing in the National title game instead of Alabama.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Because they think he might have been the #1 pick this year***

EntertainmentSPN doesn't normally hype players?

Feb 26, 2013, 8:44 PM

Manti T'eo and Johnny Manziel from this past season come to mind.

Cam Newton and Timmy Tebow as well

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Serious question about Clowney

Feb 26, 2013, 9:32 PM

Its because he's in the SEC and espn is obsessed with the sec. Also its because he made one big hit.
truth is, his stats arent great, and hes not getting much better, all he has is speed

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Serious question about Clowney

Not sure what you are watching.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

cant argue with stats...he wasnt even first in conference

Feb 27, 2013, 9:16 PM

so hth could he possibly be the best in nation? Hes NOT

Finished third in the nation in both sacks and TFL

keyword is third

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Finished third in the nation in both sacks and TFL

Feb 27, 2013, 9:44 PM

you forgot "in the nation".

13 sacks
23.5 TFL

Those are good stats.

Also kinda funny that a Clemson fan that saw Clowney get 4.5 sacks in their own stadium is trying to downplay Clowney's talent and ability

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Finished third in the nation in both sacks and TFL

Mar 11, 2013, 10:15 PM [ in reply to Re: Finished third in the nation in both sacks and TFL ]

I doubt Clowney will even come close to his 2012 stats, but neither will Tajh, or Manziel, for that matter. Everyone will scheme for them and make sure they don't beat you.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

lol

Someone actually believes this

Reality check

Feb 27, 2013, 3:44 PM

Clowney is a very good college football player, not trying to say he is not, but there is no way in he!! he wins the Heisman next year! Remember a defensive player got beat out again this year, and it was a FRESHMAN offensive player. I'm sure someone else mentioned that the last defensive player to win the Heisman, Charles Woodson, also played a little receiver and he was a return man. In order for Clowney to win the Heisman, he needs to have about 5 INTs returned for touchdowns, 100+ tackles, and a good many fumbles recovered for touchdowns. Defense may win championships, but offense and it's players put butts in seats and make the school $$$$$. Clowney is not a Heisman winner.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Reality check

Feb 27, 2013, 9:17 PM

Heck he doesnt even lead in stats at his position...lol

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

he will need crazy numbers to win

Feb 27, 2013, 11:20 PM [ in reply to Reality check ]

but i think hell get invited if he puts up only slightly better numbers than he had this year.

to win hed need 20+sacks, 30+TFL, 5+FF, and a touchdown or two. He'd also need some game-changing plays and a "Heisman moment"

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Butts in seats

Feb 27, 2013, 4:19 PM

People come to see a freak. O or D.
Clowney helps sell seats.
Ya keeping waiting on the moment.
Guy delivers.
Doubt he gets the Heisman but.....danged
if he isn't fun to watch.
