The bathtub problem

May 28, 2020, 2:48 PM

A grown man is fully submerged in a bathtub. The tub is 100% full, such that a single drop will cause the tub to overflow. For the point of this let’s say he just exhaled, and can hold his breath for several minutes.

Now, the man, who is averagely endowed, gets an erection.

Does the tub overflow?

No.

May 28, 2020, 2:52 PM

It's merely blood flow from one part of the body to another. The appearance of increased mass in the penile region will be offset by the equivalent, nearly imperceptible loss of blood mass, and thus water displacement, across the rest of the body.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

In the same vein of dinking I think it would overflow.

May 28, 2020, 3:05 PM [ in reply to No. ]

The blood behind a rib cage or in his head moving to his dink would likely displace water.

May 28, 2020, 3:15 PM [ in reply to No. ]

I’ve thought this as well, but do you have to account for surface area when determining displacement of water?

May 28, 2020, 2:54 PM

His weight doesn't change. Weight displaces water, not size.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

So a 1lb square steel block and a 10 lb square

May 28, 2020, 2:56 PM

steel block that are the same size will displace more water?

I find that hard to believe, but don't have the science to back it up.

May 28, 2020, 3:31 PM [ in reply to Incorrect...a large man-size balloon ]

You are correct. It’s a volume thing. The water must displace by the volume of the object that get submerged... or the density must change of the object submerged.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Well, now, hold on there, perfesser.

May 28, 2020, 2:59 PM [ in reply to He's not displacing any more water erect, or FBcooch sized ]

If I hold a balloon underwater, it's displacing the same amount of water as an equally-sized lead ball.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgbadge-ringofhonor-19b.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Ships are rated at tons of displacement.

May 28, 2020, 3:26 PM

As the water they displace is equivalent to their weight. There are about 5 other measurements that get confused with that, as that usually is their actual tonnage--or what they can carry.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

May 28, 2020, 3:46 PM

of the water it displaces, but it IS NOT the weight of the ship. The ship is much heavier, but it's construction, shape and weight are what determines the displacement, not the weight alone.

Make sense now...you are mixing buoyancy and displacment...

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Lets say a ship is rated at 1000 tons. That is the weight

May 28, 2020, 3:50 PM

"The displacement or displacement tonnage of a ship is its weight based on the amount of water its hull displaces at varying loads. It is measured indirectly using Archimedes' principle by first calculating the volume of water displaced by the ship then converting that value into weight displaced."
