This year's team similar to the '78 team

Nov 10, 2012, 6:49 AM

For you 'older' fans, the 2012 team reminds me of the 1978 Tigers. There was
a 12 point loss early to a good team (can't remember if UGA was ranked) to go
with wins in the rest of the games - hope this season finishes that way. Other
similarities:

- Great quarterbacks in Tajh Boyd and Steve Fuller with good throwing
mechanics and some running, though Fuller ran more and Boyd throws more.

- Good hands receivers in Nuk Hopkins and Jerry Butler with acrobatic catches.
A young Perry Tuttle was not as good as Sammy Watkins at that point.
Possession type receivers in Jaron Brown and Dwight Clark.

- Good running backs in Andre Ellington and Lester Brown with the slightly
smaller quick backs Hot Rod McDowell and Warren Ratchford.

- Good centers in Dalton Freeman and Jeff Bostic; might not have a Joe Bostic now.

The defense is probably not as good as '78, but hopefully Anthony, Steward,
Shuey, etc. will get like Randy Scott and Bubba Brown and Beasley or Crawford
or somebody will get like Jim Stuckey.

Too bad we can't play Ohio State in the Gator Bowl and have Urban Meyer punch
# 58 after a late interception and the tv announcers not say anything. And Dabo
won't be leaving for Florida and an assistant taking over for the bowl game.
I was a HS teenager back then and already a rabid fan; i like comparing current
teams and players to past ones.

That incident at the Gator Bowl remains in my mind as

Nov 10, 2012, 7:02 AM

one of the ugliest incidents in college football, particularly because it involved a coach and a player. And to Ohio State's credit, they took immediate action once the full story leaked. During the game I don't think many people, including the announcers, were aware of it other than knowing some type of brawl or incident had occurred. Later, once game film revealed it, the media launched immediate attacks on Hayes...and he was doomed. I, also, think a lot of folks across the nation had great sympathy for Clemson, since we chose to take the high road. Hope I never see anything like that again.

yeah, didn't mean it like i wish that would happen again

Guess that kind of came out wrong; do hope something like that doesn't happen again.

Didn't believe you meant that at all, BigAl31....Thought

you were just referencing it, so no apologies needed. Good post.

The announcers knew it happened

One of the replays froze on Woody in mid-punch.

But announcers were different then, and instead of highlighting the sad end to a long career they glossed over it and pretended like it didn't happen.

Hope today's game isn't like the 78 game against UMD...

Nov 10, 2012, 7:13 AM

Although that was one of the most exciting and biggest wins at the time.

I'll tell you, Smack Daddy, ole Maryland has been a thorn

Nov 10, 2012, 7:23 AM

in the sides at times, and although it's a great school and has had some rough sledding lately, I hope we will make a major statement today in a colossal blowout beginning with meeting the point spread. There is no reason for this game to ever be remotely close in scoring. GO TIGERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But if Dabo does leave for Florida

Nov 10, 2012, 7:26 AM

We have an awfully good assistant coach to promote.

Better than awfully good. Great and the reason we have experienced 2 years off consistency. He is the only variable that changed from typical 8-5, 9-4, or worse seasons. We could only hope Dabo left for Florida or another school to not lose this gem.

I have thought the same thing with one big exception....

The '78 team was a senior team. This is like having the '78 team with another year to play.

Very much agree with you and BengalBen above***
