Best option for tailgate satellite?
May 18, 2017, 1:41 PM

Is the DISH Tailgater still the best option for a satellite? Is there a specific model better than others? I'd certainly want HD...believe I have seen some that were standard definition only.
Thanks.

Good point...

I've heard both sides. Some people love them, and then I've also seen nearby tailgaters spend hours trying to get a signal.

My roommate and I used a $40 Mohu Leaf for our senior year last year. You jsut have to elevate it and it gets you like 10-12 basic channels which will always include some good games on ABC, CBS, etc.
Obviously there's much better options that will give you a better picture and better reception, but we made it work and it cost next to nothing compared to some other setups I've seen.

I've had mine for years and never had a minutes trouble with it.
Just made sure to purchase the HD receiver.

Why not just use ESPN Go app with unlimited data from your phone provider, and input to straight to TV using an HDMI conversion cord (Apple has one that goes from lightning output to HDMI), and has an input for power too.
May not get Raycom sports (until all ACC games under that programming are on ESPN go (which they may be i'm just not sure))

I would love to, but...

On gameday, good luck with getting a sufficient signal from our Verizon hot spot. We tried to use the WatchESPN app through a fire stick, but it was a constant struggle keeping it connected, constantly buffering, etc.

dish is the cheapest for a self finding HD dishes

the cheapest direct tv is buying a huge slim line dish and directing it yourself.
do you have dish or direct tv?
do you have unlimited data plan?

I'm a Directv customer, but was leaning towards the Dish Tailgater plans that are month to month.
I'll admit, I'm awful at directing the satellite myself, so the self finding option is definitely attractive.
I do have unlimited data plans, but a reliable connection in my lot on gameday is the issue. It's not bad early in the day, but as the crowds get bigger closer to kickoff you can forget it.

they do make self finding direct tv dishes

more expensive, but if you add in the cost of the Dist service for 3 months to the tailgater , it breaks even in a couple years.

But are the Directv options high definition?

I was thinking at one point the Directv option was only standard definition.

I've struggled with DISH reception period. I've done the conventional method with an in-line signal finder and then went to the tailgater for the automatic finder and per month cost. Never had consistent result getting the second satellite, which is of course the one HD and all the ESPN sports channels are on. The automatic finder for the tailgater did not work well for me at all.
My neighbor has DIRECT and sets up with a in-line finder. Has no major issues and good reception.
