Question probably for the old timers

Sep 18, 2018, 10:08 PM

Other than being tough , and whipping the guy across the line , it seems like I remember D. F. 's Oline's having some deception in their play .

Does anyone recall the type of schemes our O lines used then and how would you describe it ?

Just a touch different was me and my roommate's call: run, run, incomplete, punt.

"Bust his a$$, bust his a$$, BUST HIS A$$" Oh the days of DF

So much fun to watch Coach Ford's O linemen just whip the opponents defensive line!!

I still use that one. I have had people at road games cheer it at me in the parking lot.

I remember that cheer too. But was thinking it was more Howard than Ford?

If people were as good as their obituary - and products were as good as advertised - this would truly be a wonderful world !!

Lots of steroids in the era

Everywhere. Not just Clemson. Big arms and upper bodies. Far tougher team but far from WRU. Not better. But tougher.

Half back pass to Gary Cooper always worked.***

I believe it was Chip Davis that would take the pitch from Rodney Williams and once the safety took the bait, Chip flung it as far as he could.

Yes I know, I remember that and also a reverse with a receiver taking a pitch and we ran it so rarely it ALWAYS went for big gains .
But didn't we do something on the offensive line sort of like a pulling guard or sometimes our lineman didn't hit the guy in front of him ?

It seems like they would bust a guy who wasn't expecting it from the guy who gave it to him

Clemson’s oline under Ford used quickness not power

Sep 18, 2018, 11:54 PM

The average weight of the 81’ National Title staring Oline was around 241 pounds. They came off the ball fast and low and just created lanes for the TB. Defenses and offenses were very simplistic in that era of college footballl.
