Biggest remaining need for 2016 class is DB

Jan 4, 2016, 8:56 AM

With Alexander, Kearse, and possibly Green headed to the NFL, we will need to reload at DB. We've got some good young ones who have made an impact this year like Baker and Fields (anyone else notice him playing well in relief of Alexander against Oklahoma?). Still, the likelihood that we lose some of our existing "No Fly Zone" squad is as follows in my opinion:

Alexander - Nearly 100%
Kearse - 75% (I think he needs to demonstrate more consistency to get into the first round, but his athleticism alone would likely make him a Day 2 selection. Will test VERY well at the combine. Word from NFL teams is that he is going to declare early.)
Green - 40% (Another guy who will test very well.)
Tankersley - 25%

With that in mind, our coaches seem to be actively pursuing several DB targets. Trayvon Mullen from Coconut Creek, FL is the one we've been after the longest (#3 CB, #29 overall according to 247 Composite rankings). He'll be playing in Saturday's US Army All-American game.

We've also recently offered Lavert Hill from Detroit, MI, and he has set up an official visit for Jan. 20. He's the #11 CB and top 150 overall according to the 247 Composite.

Who else do you see us pursuing as we look to fill needs at DB?

Our biggest need is a 4th OL as two of the three already committed are projects in terms of size (need two years to grow).

Wouldn't be shocked to see this kid end up a Tiger

I don't think we're involved with Finley. My son goes to

his high school and I've seen nothing to indicate he's considering us.

Sources I've seen say otherwise.***

We've been out of the running with Finley for quite some time.

Seems like we're getting back into it. Just what I've heard***

I could see Kearse and Mac leaving

Jan 4, 2016, 9:07 AM

Kearse has a little baby girl and Mac is just on another level, no need for him to stay another year but i believe all of the other DBs will stay.

Not as needy as some think

Jan 4, 2016, 9:17 AM

We took 8 DB's 3 years ago(4 of those Redshirted). That doesn't include Green that moved from WR.We took 5 DB's last year and that doesn't count Bell and Denzel J ,who will most likely move to DB to move room for incoming WRs

I know Edwards committed to USuC because he wanted to play WR instead of DB. He also knew he wouldn't crack to 2 deep as a DB next year at Clemson.

Kearse will be taken before all . He played hurt most season

You mean he will get drafted higher? If so, i don't see how

Jan 4, 2016, 9:53 AM

Safety typically isn't a highly drafted position by NFL teams. There have only been 10 safeties selected in the 1st round of the last 5 NFL drafts, and only 1 has gone higher than 15 (Mark Barron went 7th in 2012).

From what i have seen, Kearse is potentially a late 1st rounder, but could easily fall to 2nd. I would be shocked if Mack and/or Lawson don't get drafted ahead of him.

I was saying I think he will be the first drafted of the DBs. He will be a versatile player and he is an athletic freak. But who knows, MA is a dynamic, shutdown player. I still think MA would greatly benefit from coming back. His playing injured did effect his playing this season and he still showed up big when needed. I think Shaq will be the first Tiger drafted.

the injured part I was referring to Kearse, although Alexander played banged up too. That 10 game stretch with no open dates was a lot to ask of any athlete
