Why do we not get to claim the 1948 national championship?

Martin went 11-0. Michigan didn't play in the post-season because of conference policy. Notre Dame tied USC their last game. So..... Clemson 1948 National Champions?

It was completely unorganized nationally and was little more than club ball. For instance, UNC that year lost and tied a game and were ranked 3, while CU was ranked 11. They were in the same conference and didnt play each other. Actually we played more non-conference games. Bowls were nothing more than exhibition and totally meaningless, as the votes were cast prior to the games even being played and many of the top teams didnt even bother to play in them. The champion was entirely chosen by a very biased press who who concentrated in large cities. That's why Notre Dame won it every other year even if they lost 3 or 4 games. The whole sport structure back then was ridiculous. Example, Paul Hornung won the heisman after Notre Dame went 2-8.

is not an accurate assessment of what was being played in 1948. Those guys played just as hard and were probably tougher overall than the players on the field today.
The MNC being determined by the press or a group of coaches rather than by any sort of real merit-based system was a fact back then and it remained true until very recently.

Maybe, but in all honesty, college football was totally organized in 1948 across the entire country.
Our 11-0 squad was probably as talented as any, but there wasn't a lot of publicity available for a small rural school like Clemson when compared to teams Like Notre Dame or even Ga Tech and Alabama back then.
But it was far from "club football" in organization at Clemson by that time. We'd had IPTAY for years and years and we were giving full scholarships just like the famous schools who got all the press.

The guy is probably like me living in AL or close by and has to listen to the AL numb skull redneck trash talk constantly. I think it's a great idea. Their delusional fans still think they beat us in January! Clemson: 3 time national champion. It's as legitimate as AL's 16.

can claim it. That's essentially all that Bama did. They even claimed one where some new group in the last decade or so decided to go back and retroactively rank teams. They ranked Alabama #1 in a season where Alabama hadn't previously been ranked #1 by any polls so Bama now claims that as a national title.
