Bama's onside kick

Jan 13, 2016, 7:11 PM

FWIW, and I don't know if we've already beaten this horse to death (I was flying back all yesterday) but Bobby Hartin had that guy who's a CFB ref on today in Charleston and asked him about the play.

The guy can be kind of a tool sometimes but he's usually pretty good at breaking down the rulebook in layperson's terms (he did say he thought they should've stopped play and added time back on the clock at the end of the first half).

He says the rule is if a player is "so located" to catch the ball, he has to have the opportunity to do so. It's page 71 here: http://www.ncfafootball.com/resources/Rules/FR15.pdf

You can see the contrast between where Thompson was (and wasn't) during the Bama kick:

Versus where the Coot player was in the Clemson game two years ago:

Still seems like somewhat of a judgement call but I think it was a legal play. If Thompson had been 3 or 4 yards over it may have been

Sadly we had more than a few opportunities to win other than this play...

We'll be back next year!! GO TIGERS!!!

One more point to make and I will let this die. The rule also states that no player on the kicking team shall cross the 35 yard like before the ball is kicked. Does that apply to the kicker as well? I saw a still photo earlier today where the kicker's left foot is clearly across the 35 yard line before he strikes the ball. Was that not offsides?

Kicker and holder (if required) do not have to be behind the ball. There is an exclusion for them in the rules.
